Advanced Email Drip Campaigns: Branching Logic, Behavioural Triggers and Optimisation

On this page

Beyond Basic Drip Campaigns

A basic drip campaign sends a fixed sequence of emails on a fixed schedule: email 1 on day 0, email 2 on day 3, email 3 on day 7. Everyone receives the same emails in the same order regardless of behaviour.

Advanced drip campaigns adapt based on what the recipient does:

  • Opens an email: the next email changes.
  • Clicks a specific link: they enter a different branch.
  • Visits a pricing page: they get accelerated to a sales-ready track.
  • Does not engage for 14 days: they receive a re-engagement sequence.
  • Downloads a resource: they receive related content, not a repeat of what they already have.

This guide covers how to build drip campaigns that respond to behaviour, branch based on intent signals and optimise over time.

Branching Logic

Decision points

A branching drip campaign uses decision points to route recipients into different paths:

Common decision points:

Trigger Branch A Branch B
Opened email? Yes: send next email in sequence No: resend with different subject line
Clicked link? Yes: send deeper content on that topic No: try a different topic
Visited pricing page? Yes: send case study + meeting request No: continue nurturing
Downloaded resource? Yes: send related resource No: try different content type
Replied? Yes: alert sales, pause automation No: continue sequence
Engagement score above threshold? Yes: move to sales-ready track No: continue nurturing

Branch structure

A typical branching campaign looks like a tree rather than a line:

Entry
  |
Email 1 (Introduction)
  |
[Opened?]
  | \
Yes No
  | |
Email 2A Email 2B
(Deep dive) (Resend w/ new subject)
  | |
[Clicked [Opened?]
 pricing link?] | \
  | \ Yes No
Yes No | |
  | | Email 3 Exit or
Email 3A Email 3B re-engage
(Case (More
study) education)

Implementation in major platforms

Platform Branching capability How to build
HubSpot Workflows with if/then branches Visual workflow builder, branch by engagement, property, list
Mailchimp Customer Journey Builder Drag-and-drop branching, yes/no splits
ActiveCampaign Automations with conditional logic If/else branches, goals, wait conditions
Marketo Smart Campaigns with flow steps Choice steps, triggered campaigns, nested logic
Salesforce Marketing Cloud Journey Builder Decision splits, engagement splits, Einstein scoring
Braze Canvas with decision splits Action-based, audience-based, delay splits

Behavioural Triggers

Website behaviour triggers

Connect your email platform to website analytics (or use the platform's tracking pixel) to trigger emails based on website behaviour:

Website behaviour Email trigger
Visited pricing page Case study or ROI calculator
Viewed product comparison page Comparison guide or demo offer
Returned to site after 7+ day absence "Welcome back" with relevant content
Viewed 3+ blog posts on same topic Deep-dive resource on that topic
Started but abandoned a form Reminder to complete with value proposition
Viewed careers page Content about company culture (if recruiting)
Downloaded a whitepaper Follow-up with related content

Email behaviour triggers

Email behaviour Trigger response
Opened but did not click Resend with more compelling CTA
Clicked a specific link Follow-up content related to that link topic
Forwarded the email Send content designed for sharing
Replied Alert sales, pause automation, respond personally
Unsubscribed Move to suppression list, trigger feedback survey (if permitted)
Marked as spam Suppress immediately, review content and frequency
No engagement for 30 days Re-engagement sequence

Product/app behaviour triggers

For SaaS and product companies:

Product behaviour Email trigger
Signed up for free trial Onboarding sequence
Completed first key action Congratulatory email + next steps
Not logged in for 3 days (trial) Re-engagement with value proposition
Used feature X but not feature Y Education about feature Y
Trial expiring in 7 days Upgrade prompt with benefits summary
Trial expired without converting Win-back sequence with extended trial offer
Invited team members Team collaboration features email
Hit a usage limit Upgrade prompt with plan comparison

Purchase behaviour triggers

For e-commerce and transactional businesses:

Purchase behaviour Email trigger
First purchase Welcome + cross-sell recommendations
Repeat purchase Loyalty programme invitation
Cart abandonment Recovery sequence (1 hour, 24 hours, 72 hours)
Browse abandonment Product reminder with social proof
Post-purchase (3-7 days) Review request
No purchase in 60 days Win-back with incentive
High-value purchase Personal thank you + premium service offer

Multi-Track Nurturing

Track assignment

Instead of one drip campaign for everyone, create parallel tracks based on buyer characteristics:

Track Who enters Content focus Speed
Fast track High intent: demo request, pricing page, high engagement score Case studies, ROI, comparison, meeting request 2-3 days between emails
Standard track Medium intent: content download, webinar registration Educational content, industry guides, best practices 5-7 days between emails
Slow track Low intent: newsletter signup, social follow Thought leadership, industry news, broad education 7-14 days between emails
Re-engagement Disengaged: no opens in 30+ days "Still interested?", preference update, value reminder 7 days between emails

Track transitions

Recipients should move between tracks based on behaviour:

Upgrade triggers (move to a faster track):

  • Visit pricing page.
  • Download bottom-of-funnel content (case study, buyer's guide).
  • Engage with 3+ emails in a week.
  • Reply to an email.
  • Request a demo or consultation.

Downgrade triggers (move to a slower track):

  • No engagement for 14+ days.
  • Unsubscribe from specific content types but not all.
  • Mark as "not ready" in a survey or form.

Exit triggers (leave all tracks):

  • Become a customer (move to customer onboarding).
  • Unsubscribe.
  • Hard bounce.
  • Explicitly not interested (reply or form response).

Engagement Scoring for Drip Campaigns

Scoring model

Assign points based on actions to determine engagement level and track assignment:

Action Points Decay
Open email +1 -0.5 per week without activity
Click link in email +3 -1 per week without activity
Visit website (via email link) +2 -0.5 per week without activity
Visit pricing page +10 -2 per week without activity
Download resource +5 -1 per week without activity
Reply to email +15 No decay
Request demo/meeting +25 No decay
Attend webinar +10 -2 per week without activity
Forward email +5 -1 per week without activity

Score thresholds

Score Status Action
0-10 Cold Slow track nurturing
11-25 Warming Standard track nurturing
26-50 Engaged Fast track nurturing
51+ Sales-ready Alert sales, pause marketing automation

Score decay

Engagement fades. A prospect who was highly engaged 6 months ago but has not interacted since is not sales-ready today. Implement score decay:

  • Reduce the score by a fixed amount per week of inactivity.
  • Set a floor (scores do not go below 0).
  • Reset the decay clock on any new engagement.
  • Different actions decay at different rates (a demo request stays relevant longer than an email open).

Dynamic Content

Conditional content blocks

Instead of separate emails for each segment, use conditional content blocks within a single email:

Subject: {{first_name}}, here's what's new

[HEADER - same for everyone]

[IF industry = "SaaS"]
  [SaaS-specific content block]
[ELSE IF industry = "Healthcare"]
  [Healthcare-specific content block]
[ELSE]
  [General content block]
[END IF]

[IF engagement_score > 25]
  [CTA: Book a demo]
[ELSE]
  [CTA: Download our guide]
[END IF]

[FOOTER - same for everyone]

Dynamic content variables

Variable Source Use
First name CRM/form Personalised greeting
Company name CRM/enrichment Company-specific references
Industry CRM/enrichment Industry-specific content blocks
Job title / role CRM/enrichment Role-specific messaging
Last content downloaded Marketing automation Follow-up content recommendations
Engagement score Scoring model CTA selection
Days since last engagement Marketing automation Urgency and timing
Product/plan interest Website behaviour Product-specific content

Optimisation

What to test

Element Test approach
Subject lines A/B test 2-3 variations per email
Send time Test different days and times, or use send-time optimisation AI
Email length Short (50-100 words) vs medium (150-250 words) vs long (300+ words)
CTA placement Top, middle, bottom, multiple
CTA wording "Book a demo" vs "See it in action" vs "Get started"
Content type Text vs image-heavy vs video thumbnail
Sequence length 5 emails vs 7 emails vs 10 emails
Delay between emails 2 days vs 5 days vs 7 days
Branch conditions Open-based vs click-based vs score-based branching

Measurement

Metric What it tells you Benchmark
Open rate per email Subject line and timing effectiveness 20-35% (B2B)
Click rate per email Content and CTA effectiveness 2-5% (B2B)
Sequence completion rate Engagement sustainability 30-50% reach the last email
Conversion rate Overall effectiveness of the drip 1-5% (depends on conversion goal)
Time to conversion How long the average prospect takes Varies by industry and deal size
Drop-off points Where people stop engaging Identifies weak emails
Branch distribution Where people go at decision points Reveals audience segments
Revenue attributed Business impact Varies

Continuous improvement

  1. Review drip performance monthly.
  2. Identify the email with the highest drop-off (lowest open rate relative to the previous email).
  3. Test a replacement for the weakest email.
  4. Monitor branch distribution -- if 90% go one way, the branch may not be useful.
  5. Check for cannibalisation (are drip emails competing with manual sales outreach?).
  6. Retire sequences that have been running unchanged for 6+ months. Refresh content and test new approaches.

Contact Data for Drip Campaigns

Building the entry list

Drip campaigns are only as good as the contacts entering them:

  1. Collect contacts from lead magnets, events, website forms and other sources.
  2. Export and consolidate from all collection points.
  3. Upload to Email Extractor to deduplicate across all sources.
  4. Verify email addresses before entering contacts into the drip.
  5. Enrich with company, title and industry data for segmentation and dynamic content.

Entry point variety

Different entry points feed different drip tracks:

Entry point Appropriate track Why
Blog subscriber Slow track Low intent, needs education
Whitepaper download Standard track Some intent, topic interest
Webinar registration Standard track Active interest, specific topic
Demo request Fast track High intent, sales-ready
Free trial signup Product onboarding track Evaluating the product
Referral Fast track Pre-qualified, warm introduction
