Registered Investment Adviser Market Landscape
The registered investment adviser (RIA) and wealth management industry represents one of the largest and fastest-growing segments of the US financial services sector. Approximately 15,000-16,000+ investment advisory firms are registered with the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission), managing approximately $115-130+ trillion in regulatory assets under management (AUM), while approximately 17,000-18,000+ smaller advisory firms are registered with state securities regulators (state registration is required for firms with less than $100 million in AUM, with certain exceptions). The total number of investment adviser representatives (individuals licensed to provide investment advice on behalf of registered firms) exceeds 500,000+ across both SEC-registered and state-registered firms.
The RIA channel has been the fastest-growing segment of the wealth management industry for more than a decade, as financial advisers increasingly choose the independent RIA model over employment at wirehouses (the large full-service broker-dealers including Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch/Bank of America, Wells Fargo Advisors, and UBS) and independent broker-dealers. The RIA model offers advisers fiduciary obligations to clients (rather than the lower suitability standard historically applicable to broker-dealer representatives), independence in investment selection and business management, higher compensation retention (typically 85-95% of revenue versus 40-50% at wirehouses), and the ability to build equity in a saleable business.
The largest RIA firms by AUM include Fisher Investments (approximately $250+ billion AUM), Creative Planning (approximately $250+ billion AUM after aggressive acquisitions), Edelman Financial Engines (approximately $250+ billion AUM), Mariner Wealth Advisors (approximately $90+ billion AUM), and Hightower Advisors (approximately $130+ billion AUM). RIA aggregators and acquirers including Focus Financial Partners (approximately $400+ billion AUM across partner firms), CI Financial (acquiring US RIAs through Corient, formerly CI Private Wealth), Mercer Global Advisors, Captrust, and Wealth Enhancement Group have driven significant consolidation, with private equity firms investing billions of dollars in RIA acquisitions. Despite consolidation among the largest firms, the majority of RIA firms remain small (median AUM of approximately $150-200 million) and independently owned, operating with small teams of advisers and support staff.
SEC IAPD, FINRA BrokerCheck, and Credential Databases
The SEC IAPD (Investment Adviser Public Disclosure) database is the primary regulatory database for investment advisory firms and their representatives. IAPD provides searchable access to Form ADV filings for all SEC-registered and state-registered investment advisory firms, including Part 1 (firm registration information: name, address, CRD number, state registrations, AUM, number of employees, types of advisory services, fee structures, custody of client assets, disciplinary history, and financial industry affiliations) and Part 2 (the "brochure" describing the firm's advisory services, fees, investment strategies, conflicts of interest, and disciplinary information in narrative form). IAPD data is available through the SEC's Investment Adviser Search tool and through bulk data downloads from the SEC's EDGAR system.
FINRA BrokerCheck provides registration and disciplinary information for broker-dealers and their registered representatives, including many financial advisers who hold both investment adviser representative and broker-dealer registered representative licenses (dual registrants). BrokerCheck data includes individual name, CRD number, current and previous firm affiliations, license types held (Series 6, Series 7, Series 63, Series 65, Series 66, and others), years of industry experience, and disciplinary history.
CFP Board (Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards) maintains the directory of approximately 95,000-100,000+ CFP certificants, the most widely recognized financial planning credential. CFP Board's "Find a CFP Professional" tool provides certificant name, firm affiliation, location, areas of practice, and contact information. CFA Institute maintains the directory of approximately 200,000+ CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) charterholders globally (approximately 80,000+ in the US), with the CFA credential primarily recognized in investment management and institutional asset management. CIMA (Certified Investment Management Analyst) and CPWA (Certified Private Wealth Advisor) credentials (administered by the Investments & Wealth Institute, approximately 15,000+ combined certificants) represent additional wealth management credential directories.
To verify RIA email databases, cross-reference contact records against SEC IAPD current registration data (to confirm that the firm is still registered, the AUM is current, and the named contacts are current investment adviser representatives), FINRA BrokerCheck (to confirm individual registration status and current firm affiliation), CFP Board certificant directory (to verify CFP status and current firm association), and CFA Institute member directory. Upload databases exported from SEC IAPD, FINRA BrokerCheck, CFP Board, CFA Institute, custodian adviser directories (Schwab, Fidelity, Pershing), and wealth management conference attendee databases as CSV or TXT files. Run them through Email Extractor to pull all email addresses, then use the source-bearing CSV download to trace each address back to its regulatory source for verification against current registration records, confirming that the adviser is still active, still at the firm listed, and still holding the credentials claimed.
Custodian Relationships and Technology Ecosystem
The RIA technology ecosystem is organized around custodial relationships. RIA custodians hold client assets and provide trade execution, account administration, and technology platforms for RIA firms. The three largest RIA custodians are Charles Schwab (which acquired TD Ameritrade's RIA custody business in 2020, creating a dominant custodial platform serving approximately 13,000-14,000+ RIA firms with approximately $4+ trillion in custodied assets), Fidelity Institutional (serving approximately 4,000-5,000+ RIA firms), and Pershing (a BNY Mellon company, serving approximately 700+ RIA firms plus broker-dealer clients). Each custodian maintains a searchable adviser directory (Schwab's Find an Adviser, Fidelity's Find an Adviser, Pershing's adviser directory) that provides firm name, location, services offered, and contact information for advisers who choose to be listed.
Financial planning and portfolio management software is the technology backbone of RIA operations. Financial planning software (eMoney Advisor/Fidelity, MoneyGuidePro/Envestnet, RightCapital, Orion Planning, Elements) helps advisers develop comprehensive financial plans for clients. Portfolio management and reporting platforms (Orion Portfolio Solutions, Black Diamond/SS&C, Tamarac/Envestnet, Addepar) provide portfolio accounting, performance reporting, billing, and client portal capabilities. CRM systems (Salesforce Financial Services Cloud, Wealthbox, Redtail Technology, AdvisorEngine) manage client relationships and business development. Trading and rebalancing platforms (iRebal/TD Ameritrade/Schwab, Orion Trading, Tamarac Rebalancing) automate investment management workflows.
The wealth management industry's regulatory and compliance technology needs are particularly acute, as RIA firms must comply with SEC or state regulatory requirements including the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, Form ADV filing and updating obligations, books and records requirements, custody rule compliance, marketing rule compliance (the SEC's new marketing rule, effective November 2022, replaced the prior advertising and testimonial rules with a modernized framework), and cybersecurity requirements. Compliance technology platforms (ComplySci/NRS, MyComplianceOffice, Smarsh for communications archiving, Global Relay) help RIA firms manage these regulatory obligations, creating a significant market for regtech solutions targeting the RIA channel.
