Scraping Angel Investor Databases, VC Firm Directories, Startup Accelerator Alumni Lists and Funding Announcement Pages for Startup Outreach

Three Audiences, One Ecosystem

The startup and venture capital ecosystem contains three distinct audiences that all benefit from the same data sources, but use them for different purposes.

Startups seeking funding need to identify and reach investors who are actively investing in their stage (pre-seed, seed, Series A), sector (SaaS, healthcare, fintech, climate), and geography. The difference between a warm introduction and a cold email to the right partner at the right fund is meaningful, but cold outreach still works when it is targeted, specific, and demonstrates genuine understanding of the investor's thesis.

B2B companies targeting funded startups sell tools, services, and infrastructure to the startup ecosystem. A startup that just raised a Series A has money to spend and immediate needs: hiring (recruiting platforms), marketing (ad tools, PR agencies), operations (legal, accounting, office space), and technology (cloud infrastructure, SaaS tools). Funding announcements are the strongest buying signal for this audience.

Service providers to the VC/startup ecosystem include law firms specializing in venture financing, accounting firms handling startup audits, executive recruiters placing C-suite hires at portfolio companies, and commercial real estate brokers leasing office space to growing companies. Their prospects are the investors and the companies those investors fund.

Key Data Sources

AngelList (now Wellfound) lists startups, investors, and job postings. Company profiles include founding team members, funding stage, investor names, and sometimes contact information. Investor profiles list portfolio companies, investment thesis, and check size. Save search result pages and individual profile pages as HTML. Upload to Email Extractor to extract email addresses from profiles that include contact information.

Crunchbase is the most comprehensive startup and funding database. Company profiles include funding history (every round, the amount, and the investors), founding team, board members, and company website. Investor profiles list portfolio companies, investment amounts, and fund partners. Crunchbase's free tier provides basic data; the Pro tier includes direct contact information. Export search results or save profile pages as HTML for extraction.

VC firm websites are the most direct source of investor contact information. Most VC firms publish team pages listing every partner, principal, and associate, along with their investment focus, portfolio companies, and often direct email or a contact form. Save the team page as HTML. Upload to Email Extractor to extract partner and associate email addresses. Many firms use a consistent email pattern (firstname@firmname.com) that is visible on the team page.

Accelerator and incubator alumni directories list companies that have gone through programs like Y Combinator, Techstars, 500 Startups (now 500 Global), Plug and Play, MassChallenge, and hundreds of regional programs. Alumni directories typically include company name, founder names, description, and sometimes contact information and current status. These directories are valuable for two audiences: investors looking at pipeline (accelerator alumni are pre-vetted) and B2B sellers targeting post-accelerator companies (which have just received funding and mentorship and are ready to scale).

Funding announcement pages and press releases appear on TechCrunch, VentureBeat, Business Insider, and industry-specific publications. Each funding announcement includes the company, the amount raised, the lead investor, participating investors, and sometimes quotes from the CEO and lead partner. These announcements are real-time signals of buying intent (the company has money) and investment activity (the investor just deployed capital).

Pitch competition and demo day listings identify early-stage companies that are actively seeking exposure and funding. Y Combinator Demo Day companies, Techstars Demo Day cohorts, university pitch competitions, and regional startup competitions all publish participant lists. Save these listing pages as HTML.

Building an Investor Outreach List

For startups seeking funding, the investor outreach list should be built systematically rather than assembled from random searches.

Start by defining your target investor profile: stage (pre-seed angels invest differently than Series B funds), sector (a healthtech-focused fund will not invest in a consumer social app), geography (many investors have geographic preferences, especially at early stages), and check size (an investor who writes $25K checks is a different conversation than one who leads $10M rounds).

Search Crunchbase and AngelList for investors matching your profile. Save result pages and individual investor profiles as HTML. Upload to Email Extractor to extract email addresses from profiles that include them. For investors without listed email addresses, visit their firm's website and extract contact information from the team page.

Cross-reference your investor list with their recent portfolio companies. An investor who just led a round in a company similar to yours (same sector, same stage, similar business model) may be especially interested -- or may have just filled that slot in their portfolio. Both are useful signals: the former is a warm lead, the latter is a timing issue you can acknowledge in your outreach.

Build a spreadsheet tracking each investor with their fund, investment thesis, recent investments, check size, portfolio companies in your space, mutual connections (for warm introductions), and contact information. This research takes time but dramatically improves response rates compared to batch-emailing every investor on AngelList.

Outreach for B2B Companies Targeting Funded Startups

For companies selling to startups, funding announcements are the primary trigger for outreach. A company that raised $5 million last week has immediate needs and the budget to address them.

Monitor funding announcements through Crunchbase alerts, TechCrunch, and industry news. When a company in your target market raises a round, research the company and send targeted outreach within 1-2 weeks of the announcement.

"Hi [Founder Name], congratulations on the [round size] raise led by [lead investor]. Exciting milestone for [Company Name]. As you scale from here, [specific challenge that companies at this stage face in their industry] becomes a priority. We help post-raise startups [specific value proposition], and we have worked with [X] companies at a similar stage, including [reference client if you have one in their space]. Would it be worth a 15-minute call to see if we can help accelerate your post-raise execution?"

This outreach works because it is timely (the funding just happened), specific (it references their exact raise and investor), and relevant (it addresses a challenge they are likely facing right now).

Consolidating Startup Ecosystem Data

If you are building prospect lists from multiple startup and VC databases, consolidate regularly. Export from Crunchbase, AngelList, VC firm websites, accelerator directories, and funding announcement clippings. Upload all to Email Extractor to deduplicate across sources. A founder who appears in Crunchbase, AngelList, and a Y Combinator alumni directory should be one contact record, and an investor who appears on their firm's website, in Crunchbase, and in a funding announcement should likewise be deduplicated.

Download as CSV with sources to maintain attribution. Knowing that a contact appeared across multiple sources helps prioritize: a founder listed in three databases is more established (and more likely to have accurate, current contact information) than one appearing in only one source.
