Scraping Supplier Directories, Wholesale Marketplaces and Manufacturer Databases for Procurement and Sourcing

Why Supplier Directories Are Underused Goldmines

Every procurement professional knows the pain of supplier discovery. You need a new vendor for a component, a raw material, or a service, and the search usually starts with a Google search, a question to colleagues, or a scroll through the same handful of suppliers you have always used. This approach is slow, biased toward familiarity, and almost certainly leaves better options undiscovered.

Supplier directories exist to solve this problem. Platforms like ThomasNet, Kompass, GlobalSpec, Maker's Row, and industry-specific directories aggregate thousands of manufacturers, distributors, and service providers into searchable databases. Trade associations publish member directories that function as vetted supplier lists. Wholesale marketplaces like Alibaba, IndiaMART, and Faire organize suppliers by product category and capability.

The challenge is that these directories are designed for browsing, not for systematic outreach. A procurement team evaluating 50 potential suppliers for a new product line does not want to visit 50 individual profile pages and manually copy email addresses into a spreadsheet. Extracting contact data in bulk makes the sourcing process dramatically faster.

Extraction Workflow

The basic workflow applies to any web-based directory. Search the directory for your product category, material type, or service need. Browse the results and save relevant pages as HTML files from your browser. For directories that paginate results across multiple pages, save each page of results separately. Upload the saved HTML files to Email Extractor to extract email addresses from the pages.

Many supplier directories include email addresses directly on the listing page or the supplier's profile page. Others require clicking through to the supplier's own website. For suppliers without email addresses on their directory listing, save their company website's contact page as HTML and upload to Email Extractor to find published contact information.

Download results as CSV with sources so you can track which email came from which directory page. This source attribution matters for organizing outreach: a supplier found on ThomasNet (a US-focused industrial directory) should receive different outreach than one found on Alibaba (a global marketplace with different communication norms and expectations).

Directory-Specific Approaches

ThomasNet is the largest industrial supplier directory in North America, with listings for manufacturers, distributors, and service companies across virtually every industrial category. Supplier profiles on ThomasNet typically include company overview, capabilities, certifications, locations, and contact information. Save the search results pages and individual supplier profile pages as HTML. ThomasNet profiles frequently include a general inquiry email or a sales contact email.

Kompass is a global B2B directory covering 70+ countries, particularly strong in Europe. Supplier profiles include detailed product classifications using the Kompass classification system, company financials (for some listings), executive names and titles, and contact information. Save country-specific search results and company profile pages.

Alibaba and Global Sources are the dominant directories for overseas manufacturing, particularly in China and Southeast Asia. Supplier profiles include product catalogs, factory information, trade assurance status, and contact details. These platforms are designed for direct messaging through the platform, but many suppliers also list email addresses on their profiles. Save supplier profile pages and "Contact Supplier" pages as HTML.

Industry-specific directories are often the most valuable because they are curated for a specific vertical. The packaging industry has directories from PMMI and IoPP. The food industry has directories from IFT and SFA. The textile industry has directories from AATCC and Textile World. Medical device manufacturing has directories from MDDI and AdvaMed. Search "[your industry] supplier directory" and "[your industry] manufacturer directory" to find the relevant ones.

Trade association member directories function as pre-vetted supplier lists. Membership in a trade association signals a baseline level of professionalism, investment in the industry, and willingness to engage with peers. Save member directory pages as HTML and upload to Email Extractor to extract contact information.

Building a Sourcing Database

For procurement teams that source regularly, building a structured supplier database from directory extractions creates a durable competitive advantage. After extracting contacts from multiple directories, upload all result files to Email Extractor to deduplicate across sources. A manufacturer that appears on ThomasNet, Kompass, and their industry association directory should be one record.

Organize the deduplicated database with fields for supplier name, primary contact email, source directory, product category, geographic location, certifications (ISO, FDA, UL, etc.), minimum order quantities (if listed), and notes on capabilities. This database becomes your first resource when a new sourcing need arises, eliminating the need to start from scratch with directory searches each time.

Outreach for Sourcing

Supplier outreach differs from sales outreach. You are the buyer, which means the supplier is motivated to respond. But suppliers receive dozens of vague inquiries per week ("I am interested in your products, please send me more information"), and they prioritize inquiries that signal serious buying intent.

Write specific inquiries: "Hi [Name], I am [Title] at [Company]. We are sourcing [specific product/material/component] for [specific application]. Our requirements include [2-3 key specifications: material, quantity, tolerance, certification, delivery timeline]. Annual volume is approximately [quantity]. Can you provide pricing and lead time for this specification? If your capabilities align, I would like to discuss further."

This email works because it demonstrates that you have a real, defined need (not a fishing expedition), you have thought about your requirements (the supplier does not need to guess what you want), and the volume and timeline suggest a legitimate order (not a sample request that will never turn into business).
