Brevo vs SendGrid vs Amazon SES: Comparing Transactional Email, Marketing Automation and Bulk Sending Platforms for Startups, SaaS Companies and E-Commerce Businesses
On this page
Platform Overview
Brevo (formerly Sendinblue), Twilio SendGrid and Amazon SES occupy different positions in the email sending market. Brevo is a marketing-first platform with transactional email capabilities. SendGrid is a developer-first transactional email platform with marketing features. Amazon SES is a bare-bones, high-volume sending infrastructure with no built-in marketing tools. The right choice depends on whether you need marketing automation, developer-friendly APIs, or the lowest possible per-email cost at scale:
| Factor | Brevo | SendGrid | Amazon SES |
|---|---|---|---|
| Origin | Marketing automation platform (founded 2012 as Sendinblue; rebranded to Brevo 2023) | Transactional email API (founded 2009; acquired by Twilio 2019) | AWS infrastructure service (launched 2011) |
| Primary strength | All-in-one marketing: email, SMS, WhatsApp, chat, CRM, landing pages, meeting scheduling | Developer-friendly email API with strong deliverability; marketing campaigns as add-on | Lowest cost per email at high volume; deep AWS ecosystem integration |
| Primary weakness | API and transactional email are secondary to marketing features; less developer-friendly than SendGrid | Marketing automation is basic compared to dedicated marketing platforms; pricing has increased significantly since Twilio acquisition | No built-in marketing tools, templates, contact management or reporting dashboard; requires significant development to use |
| Best for | Small to mid-size businesses that want marketing automation and transactional email in one platform without developer resources | SaaS companies and developers who need reliable transactional email with a strong API and some marketing capability | High-volume senders (100,000+ emails/month) with development resources who want the lowest per-email cost and are already in the AWS ecosystem |
Pricing Comparison
| Volume | Brevo | SendGrid | Amazon SES |

| 10,000 emails/month | Starter plan: $25/month (20,000 emails); no daily limit | Essentials plan: $19.95/month (up to 50,000 emails); additional at $0.001/email over plan | $1.00 (at $0.10 per 1,000 emails); plus $0.12 per GB of attachments |
| 50,000 emails/month | Business plan: $65/month (includes marketing automation, A/B testing, send time optimisation) | Essentials plan: $19.95/month (covers up to 50,000) | $5.00 |

Cost analysis at scale
| Monthly volume | Brevo annual cost | SendGrid annual cost | Amazon SES annual cost | Cheapest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10,000 | $300/year (Starter) | $239/year (Essentials) | $12/year | Amazon SES |
| 50,000 | $780/year (Business) | $239/year (Essentials) | $60/year | Amazon SES |
| 100,000 | $1,380/year (Business) | $1,079/year (Pro) | $120/year | Amazon SES |
| 500,000 | Custom | ~$3,000/year (Pro) | $600/year | Amazon SES |
| 1,000,000 | Custom | ~$5,400/year (Pro) | $1,200/year | Amazon SES |
Amazon SES is dramatically cheaper at every volume tier. The cost difference pays for the development time required to build the features that Brevo and SendGrid include (templates, contact management, analytics, suppression management). For companies already on AWS with development resources, the savings are substantial. For companies without developers, the "free" features in Brevo and SendGrid are worth the premium.

List Preparation
Before importing contacts into any of these platforms, upload your contact files (CSV exports from CRMs, spreadsheets, text files with mixed data) to Email Extractor to extract and deduplicate email addresses. Removing duplicates and extracting clean email addresses before import prevents inflated contact counts (which affect pricing on Brevo and SendGrid), reduces bounce rates on first send and protects your sending reputation from day one.
