Use Case Recommendations

If you need... Best choice Why
Lowest cost at high volume Amazon SES $0.10 per 1,000 emails; no monthly minimums
One platform for transactional + marketing SendGrid Built-in marketing tools; campaign builder; contact management
Fastest, most reliable transactional delivery Postmark Sub-10-second delivery; dedicated transactional infrastructure
AWS-native architecture Amazon SES Native integration with Lambda, SNS, S3, CloudWatch
Visual email template building SendGrid Drag-and-drop template editor
Startup with low volume SendGrid or Amazon SES SendGrid: 100 free/day; SES: 62K free from EC2
Developer experience and documentation Postmark Clean API; excellent documentation; fast support
Full marketing automation SendGrid (or consider dedicated ESP) Marketing campaigns; automation; A/B testing
Compliance-sensitive sending (healthcare, finance) Postmark or SendGrid Better deliverability controls; compliance features
If you need to avoid... Avoid Why
Building your own unsubscribe, bounce, and complaint handling Amazon SES SES provides building blocks; you assemble them
Complex AWS configuration Amazon SES SES requires IAM, SNS, SQS, CloudWatch setup
Slow support response Amazon SES (basic support) AWS support depends on support plan (extra cost)
Marketing emails in same stream as transactional Postmark (before message streams) Postmark separates streams (now a feature, not a limitation)

Preparing Contact Data Before Sending

Whichever sending platform you choose, start with clean data. All three platforms penalise poor list quality: SendGrid may suspend accounts with high bounce rates; Amazon SES may throttle or suspend sending; Postmark has strict bounce and complaint thresholds. Before importing contacts into any sending platform, upload your email lists from CRM exports (CSV), marketing platform exports (CSV), spreadsheet lists and other sources to Email Extractor to extract and deduplicate email addresses. Deduplication prevents sending duplicate messages (which inflate costs on all three platforms and annoy recipients) and removes formatting issues that cause bounces.
