Email Marketing Platform Comparison: Advanced Features for Growing Teams

On this page

Beyond Basic Email Blasts

When your email programme outgrows basic newsletters, you need a platform that supports advanced automation, deep segmentation, multi-channel coordination and sophisticated reporting. The platform choice at this stage significantly affects what you can do and how fast you can move.

This guide compares platforms for teams that have outgrown beginner tools and need capabilities like branching automations, behavioural triggers, advanced segmentation and API access.

The Platforms

This comparison covers six platforms commonly used by growing teams (roughly 5,000 to 500,000 contacts):

  • ActiveCampaign (automation-first).
  • Klaviyo (ecommerce-focused).
  • HubSpot Marketing Hub (all-in-one CRM + marketing).
  • Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) (multi-channel, affordable).
  • Mailchimp (established, broad feature set).
  • Kit (formerly ConvertKit) (creator-focused, simple automation).

Automation

Automation is the differentiating feature for growing teams. The ability to create complex, branching email sequences that respond to subscriber behaviour.

ActiveCampaign

Strength: Best-in-class automation builder.

  • Visual automation builder with branching, conditions, wait steps and goals.
  • Trigger automations from virtually any event: form submission, page visit, email engagement, CRM deal stage change, tag added, custom API event.
  • Split actions within automations (if/then branching based on any contact field or behaviour).
  • Goal tracking within automations (define a conversion goal; contacts who reach it exit the automation).
  • Automation maps (visualise how automations connect).
  • Predictive sending (send at the optimal time for each contact).

Limitations: The power creates complexity. Non-technical users may struggle with advanced automations.

Klaviyo

Strength: Ecommerce-native automation.

  • Pre-built flows for ecommerce: abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, winback, replenishment.
  • Trigger from Shopify/WooCommerce/BigCommerce events natively.
  • Conditional splits based on order value, product category, customer lifetime value.
  • A/B testing within flows (test different email content, timing, or branch paths).

Limitations: Less flexible for non-ecommerce use cases. Automations assume an ecommerce data model.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

Strength: CRM-integrated automation.

  • Workflows triggered by any CRM property change (lifecycle stage, deal stage, company property).
  • Cross-object workflows (contact, company, deal, ticket).
  • Goal-based workflows with re-enrollment.
  • Internal notification actions (notify sales when a lead takes a key action).
  • Attribution reporting tied to automation steps.

Limitations: Advanced workflow features require Professional plan ($800+/month). Free and Starter plans have basic automation only.

Brevo

Strength: Multi-channel automation at low cost.

  • Visual automation builder with email, SMS and WhatsApp actions.
  • Trigger from website events, email engagement, transactional events.
  • Lead scoring within automations.
  • Transactional and marketing automation in one platform.

Limitations: Automation builder is less sophisticated than ActiveCampaign. Fewer trigger types and conditions.

Mailchimp

Strength: Wide adoption and template library.

  • Customer Journey Builder for visual automation.
  • Pre-built journeys for common scenarios.
  • Branching based on tags, segments, campaign activity.
  • Send-time optimisation.

Limitations: Automation capabilities lag behind ActiveCampaign and Klaviyo. Pricing has increased significantly.

Kit

Strength: Simple, creator-friendly automation.

  • Visual automation builder designed for simplicity.
  • Tag-based subscriber management.
  • Event triggers, link triggers, purchase triggers.
  • Integrates with creator tools (Teachable, Gumroad, Podia).

Limitations: Limited branching logic. No multi-channel (email only). Not designed for teams larger than a few people.

Segmentation

Comparison

Feature ActiveCampaign Klaviyo HubSpot Brevo Mailchimp Kit
Behavioural segments Yes Yes Yes Basic Yes Basic
Purchase-based segments Via integration Native Via CRM Via events Via integration Via integration
Predictive segments Limited Yes (CLV, churn risk) Yes (lead scoring) No Yes No

Dynamic segments Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes

Key differences

Klaviyo segments on ecommerce data natively: purchase frequency, average order value, predicted next purchase date, product affinity, customer lifetime value. This is its standout feature for ecommerce.

ActiveCampaign segments on any combination of contact data, engagement data, CRM data, tags and custom fields. The most flexible general-purpose segmentation.

HubSpot segments on CRM data, which includes sales interactions, deal stages, and custom properties alongside marketing engagement. Strongest for B2B sales-marketing alignment.

Deliverability

Infrastructure

Feature ActiveCampaign Klaviyo HubSpot Brevo Mailchimp Kit
Shared IP (default) Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Dedicated IP $750+/year Included at higher tiers Included at Professional+ Available Available No
IP warm-up tools Manual Guided Built-in Manual Guided N/A
Authentication (SPF/DKIM) Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
DMARC support Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes

Deliverability reputation

All six platforms maintain good sending reputations on their shared IPs. However, shared IP deliverability depends on other senders on the same IP. For teams sending 50,000+ emails per month, a dedicated IP provides more control.

Best for deliverability: ActiveCampaign and Klaviyo are generally rated highest for inbox placement in independent tests. HubSpot is strong for B2B. Mailchimp's deliverability has declined as its user base has grown.

Integrations

Native integrations

Platform CRM Ecommerce Webinar Forms Analytics
ActiveCampaign Built-in CRM, Salesforce, HubSpot Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce Zoom, GoToWebinar Built-in Google Analytics
Klaviyo Salesforce, HubSpot Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento Limited Built-in Google Analytics, Mixpanel

Mailchimp Salesforce Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce GoToWebinar Built-in Google Analytics
Kit Limited Shopify, Gumroad, Teachable Limited Built-in Basic

API quality

For teams that build custom integrations:

Best APIs: ActiveCampaign (comprehensive REST API), Klaviyo (well-documented, event-driven), HubSpot (extensive API ecosystem).

Adequate APIs: Brevo (functional), Mailchimp (widely used but has limitations).

Limited APIs: Kit (basic, creator-focused).

Reporting and Analytics

Email performance

All platforms provide standard metrics: open rate, click rate, bounce rate, unsubscribe rate, revenue attribution.

Advanced analytics

Feature ActiveCampaign Klaviyo HubSpot Brevo Mailchimp Kit
Revenue attribution Yes Yes (strong) Yes (strong) Basic Yes Basic
Automation performance Yes Yes Yes Basic Yes Basic
Cohort analysis Limited Yes Yes No Limited No
Predictive analytics Limited Yes (CLV, churn) Yes (lead scoring) No Yes No
Custom dashboards Limited Yes Yes No Basic No

Klaviyo stands out for ecommerce analytics: revenue per email, revenue per flow, customer lifetime value tracking, product performance in email.

HubSpot stands out for attribution: multi-touch revenue attribution across email, ads, website and sales interactions.

Pricing at Scale

Pricing for 25,000 contacts (approximate, check vendor websites for current pricing):

Platform Monthly cost What is included
ActiveCampaign Professional ~$190/month CRM, automation, segmentation, integrations
Klaviyo ~$400/month Email, SMS (separate), flows, analytics
HubSpot Professional ~$890/month CRM (free), marketing automation, reporting
Brevo Business ~$65/month Email, SMS, chat, automation
Mailchimp Standard ~$300/month Email, automation, templates, analytics
Kit Creator Pro ~$200/month Email, automation, creator tools

Cost-per-contact notes:

  • Brevo is the most affordable and charges by email volume, not contacts. This is significant if you have a large list but send infrequently.
  • HubSpot is the most expensive but includes a full CRM. The cost is for the platform, not just email.
  • Klaviyo is expensive per contact but strong ROI for ecommerce businesses with high revenue per email.
  • ActiveCampaign is the best value for advanced automation at mid-market pricing.
  • Mailchimp has become expensive relative to its feature set at higher tiers.

Importing Extracted Lists

After extracting and deduplicating email addresses with Email Extractor, every platform supports CSV import.

Platform Import experience
ActiveCampaign CSV import with field mapping, tag assignment, list selection. Automated deduplication.
Klaviyo CSV import with field mapping. Profiles merge automatically by email.
HubSpot CSV import with field mapping, association to companies. Auto-deduplication by email.
Brevo CSV import with field mapping, list assignment. Simple interface.
Mailchimp CSV import with field mapping, audience selection. Tag assignment during import.
Kit CSV import with tag assignment. Simpler interface, fewer field options.

For detailed import guides, see the platform-specific articles in the List management section.

Best Fit Summary

Advanced automation on a budget: ActiveCampaign. The most capable automation builder at a fraction of HubSpot's price.

Multi-channel on a tight budget: Brevo. Email, SMS and WhatsApp in one platform at the lowest cost.
