How to Extract Emails from an Authorized Slack Export

On this page

Use an authorized workspace export

A Slack export can contain addresses in member profiles and message text. It is not necessarily a complete contact directory. Export scope depends on the workspace plan, permissions, approved export type and available retained data.

Use the workspace's approved process for migration, administration or another documented purpose. Access to an export does not make every mentioned address appropriate for a new mailing list. Messages can include private client contacts, quoted correspondence and unrelated addresses.

Request the right export

Slack's workspace export instructions describe who can export and which conversation types are available. Public-channel exports are available across plans. Private-channel and direct-message exports require eligible export access; paying for Pro alone does not grant that scope.

On desktop, use the administration settings to locate Import & export data, select the permitted scope and date range, and request the export. Download it when Slack reports that it is ready. Your workspace's interface and permissions determine the options you see.

Do not request broader access merely to build a contact list. Use a member-management export or approved contact record when that better fits the task.

Select the JSON files you need

Unzip the archive on your computer first. Email Extractor does not accept a Slack ZIP as a directly readable document.

Slack's export-format guide explains the files and identifiers. Inspect users.json, if present, for profile email fields. Conversation files can contain addresses in message text. User IDs such as U01234567 are not email addresses, and a mention does not reveal a hidden profile email.

A simplified profile example is:

{
  "id": "U01234567",
  "profile": {
    "email": "member@example.org"
  }
}

Extract and inspect the results

  1. Open Text and files and select the relevant JSON files.
  2. Keep each file below 25 MB and the selected batch below 100 MB.
  3. Click Extract emails.
  4. Review the results and download CSV + sources for provenance.

The JSON reader scans string values. It does not retrieve linked Slack attachments, open message URLs or resolve user IDs through Slack's API. An address in an attachment is absent unless you separately obtain and process a supported file.

Compare a sample against the original records. A profile may be deactivated or incomplete; a message address may belong to someone outside the workspace. The extractor does not automatically restrict results to active members.

For community transitions, maintain subscription preferences separately. Joining a workspace is not agreement to an unrelated newsletter. Keep exports and source-bearing results under your organization's access and retention policies.
