Multi-Channel Outreach Strategies: Email, LinkedIn, Phone and Beyond

On this page

Why Multi-Channel Outreach

Single-channel outreach has diminishing returns. Email inboxes are crowded. LinkedIn connection requests are filtered. Cold calls go to voicemail. Multi-channel outreach combines channels so each one reinforces the others, increasing the probability that a prospect sees, remembers and responds to your message.

Research consistently shows that multi-channel sequences outperform single-channel sequences:

  • Multi-channel sequences produce 2-3x higher response rates than email-only sequences.
  • Prospects reached on 3+ channels are more likely to remember the outreach.
  • Different channels reach different people (some check email constantly, others live on LinkedIn, others prefer phone).

Channels and Their Strengths

Email

Strengths:

  • Scalable (hundreds of personalised emails per day with automation).
  • Asynchronous (the prospect responds when convenient).
  • Trackable (opens, clicks, replies).
  • Content-rich (can include links, attachments, images).
  • Professional and expected in B2B.

Weaknesses:

  • Crowded inboxes (average professional receives 120+ emails per day).
  • Spam filters (cold email may not reach the inbox).
  • Impersonal at scale (templates feel generic).
  • Easy to ignore or delete.

Best for: Initial outreach, follow-up, sharing content and resources, scheduling.

LinkedIn

Strengths:

  • High visibility (LinkedIn messages have higher open rates than email).
  • Profile context (the prospect can see who you are before responding).
  • Relationship-building (connection, content engagement, mutual connections).
  • Less crowded than email (most people receive fewer LinkedIn messages than emails).
  • Social proof (your profile, recommendations, content establish credibility).

Weaknesses:

  • Limited scale (LinkedIn limits connection requests and InMails).
  • Character limits (InMail and connection request messages are shorter than email).
  • Platform-dependent (LinkedIn can change rules, restrict features, ban accounts).
  • Mixing professional and personal (some people treat LinkedIn as personal space).

Best for: Warming up before email, engaging with content, connection-building, reaching executives.

Phone

Strengths:

  • Immediate and personal.
  • Two-way conversation (can handle objections, ask questions, build rapport in real time).
  • Difficult to ignore (a ringing phone demands attention).
  • Conveys tone and personality better than text.

Weaknesses:

  • Low connect rates (most calls go to voicemail).
  • Interruptive (people are in meetings, focused on work).
  • Not scalable (one call at a time).
  • Requires skill and confidence (cold calling is uncomfortable for many).
  • Time-zone dependent.

Best for: High-value prospects, follow-up after email/LinkedIn engagement, closing.

Direct mail

Strengths:

  • Stands out (far less competition than digital channels).
  • Physical presence (sits on the desk, hard to ignore).
  • Creative possibilities (handwritten notes, branded packages, gifts).
  • No spam filters.

Weaknesses:

  • Expensive (cost per touch is 10-50x digital).
  • Slow (delivery takes days).
  • Not trackable in real time.
  • Limited scale.

Best for: High-value target accounts, ABM campaigns, re-engagement of cold prospects.

Video messages

Strengths:

  • Personal and memorable (your face and voice).
  • Demonstrates effort (clearly not mass-produced).
  • High engagement (video thumbnails in email increase click rates).

Weaknesses:

  • Time-intensive (recording individual videos).
  • Quality expectations (poor audio/video is worse than no video).
  • File size and deliverability (video attachments can trigger spam filters).

Best for: Key accounts, follow-up to expressed interest, demo walkthroughs.

Channel Orchestration

Sequencing principles

Start where you have the most data. If you have a verified email address, start with email. If you have a LinkedIn profile but no email, start with LinkedIn.

Use social before email. LinkedIn engagement before a cold email gives the prospect context. When they see your email, they may recognise your name from LinkedIn.

Use phone after digital. "I sent you an email last Tuesday about [topic]" gives the call context and demonstrates persistence without being cold.

Vary the message, not just the channel. Each touch should add value or present a different angle. Repeating the same pitch across channels is multi-channel spam.

Escalate commitment gradually. Start with low-commitment asks (read this article, watch this video) and progress to higher-commitment asks (15-minute call, demo, meeting).

Channel-specific timing

Email:

  • Tuesday through Thursday typically have the highest open rates for B2B.
  • Morning (8-10 AM in the prospect's time zone) or early afternoon (1-2 PM).
  • Avoid Monday mornings and Friday afternoons.

LinkedIn:

  • Tuesday through Thursday, business hours.
  • Engage with content before sending messages.
  • Allow 24-48 hours between engaging with content and sending a connection request.

Phone:

  • Wednesday and Thursday are the best days for cold calls.
  • 8-9 AM (before the day fills with meetings) or 4-5 PM (wrapping up the day).
  • Avoid lunch hours and Monday/Friday.

Cross-channel references

Connecting touches across channels increases recognition and response:

  • Email after LinkedIn: "I noticed we're both connected to [mutual connection] on LinkedIn..."
  • Phone after email: "I sent you an email on Tuesday about [specific topic]. I wanted to follow up quickly..."
  • LinkedIn after phone: "Great speaking with you earlier. As discussed, here's the [resource]..."
  • Email after direct mail: "I sent you a [item] last week with some thoughts on [topic]..."

Building the Contact List

Multi-channel contact data requirements

Multi-channel outreach requires more data per prospect than email-only:

Channel Data needed
Email Verified email address
LinkedIn LinkedIn profile URL
Phone Direct dial or mobile number
Direct mail Physical mailing address
Video Email address (for delivery)

Data collection workflow

  1. Start with your target account list.
  2. Identify decision makers and influencers at each account.
  3. Collect LinkedIn profile URLs (manual search or data provider).
  4. Collect email addresses (data provider, website extraction, pattern matching).
  5. Collect phone numbers (data provider, company website, LinkedIn).
  6. Verify email addresses before outreach.

For email extraction, export contacts from your research sources and upload to Email Extractor to consolidate and deduplicate before importing into your outreach platform.

Personalisation Across Channels

Consistency

The prospect should recognise a consistent thread across channels:

  • Same core message and value proposition.
  • Same visual identity (profile photo, company branding).
  • References to previous touches across channels.
  • Consistent tone and professionalism.

Channel-appropriate personalisation

Email personalisation:

  • Company-specific observation (recent news, job posting, technology choice).
  • Role-specific pain point.
  • Relevant case study or metric.
  • Personalised subject line.

LinkedIn personalisation:

  • Reference their recent post or article.
  • Mention mutual connections.
  • Comment on their career path or role.
  • Share relevant content they would find valuable.

Phone personalisation:

  • Reference previous email or LinkedIn touchpoints.
  • Mention their specific situation (not a script).
  • Ask questions rather than pitch.
  • Be prepared for their specific industry and role.

See Cold Email Personalisation at Scale.

Compliance

Email compliance

  • CAN-SPAM (US): Include physical address, unsubscribe mechanism, accurate header information.
  • GDPR (EU): Legitimate interest basis for B2B, data processing records, right to opt out.
  • CASL (Canada): Implied consent for B2B with existing relationship; express consent otherwise.

Phone compliance

  • TCPA (US): National Do-Not-Call Registry compliance, calling hours (8 AM - 9 PM local time).
  • State-specific rules: Some US states have additional restrictions.
  • International: Many countries have stricter telemarketing rules than the US.

LinkedIn compliance

  • LinkedIn's User Agreement and Professional Community Policies.
  • Connection request limits.
  • InMail policies.
  • Anti-automation policies.

Measuring Multi-Channel Performance

Metrics by channel

Metric Email LinkedIn Phone
Volume Emails sent Requests/messages sent Calls made
Engagement Open rate, click rate Acceptance rate, view rate Connect rate
Response Reply rate Message reply rate Conversation rate
Conversion Meetings booked Meetings booked Meetings booked

Sequence-level metrics

Metric Definition Target
Reply rate Total replies / prospects in sequence 10-25% (varies by market)
Positive reply rate Interested replies / prospects in sequence 3-8%
Meeting rate Meetings booked / prospects in sequence 2-5%
Touches to meeting Average touchpoints before a meeting is booked 5-8
Optimal sequence length Point at which additional touches produce diminishing returns Test and measure

Attribution

Multi-channel attribution is complex. A prospect who received 3 emails, saw 2 LinkedIn touches and answered a phone call may have been influenced by all channels, but only the phone call gets the "last touch" credit.

Recommended approach:

  • Track all touches across all channels.
  • Attribute the meeting to the sequence (not a single channel).
  • Analyse which channel combinations produce the highest meeting rates.
  • Optimise the sequence as a whole, not individual channels in isolation.
