How to Extract Emails from SurveyMonkey Responses

On this page

Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.

Why Extract from SurveyMonkey?

SurveyMonkey is a survey and feedback platform. It provides survey creation, question types, logic and branching, templates, distribution (email, web link, social, embed), analytics, reporting and integrations. Surveys often collect respondent email addresses through email collector metadata, contact fields or custom questions.

Extracting email addresses from SurveyMonkey data is useful for importing into a marketing platform, following up with survey respondents, segmenting respondents by answers, consolidating feedback contacts or building a list from research participants.

How to Export from SurveyMonkey

Exporting individual responses

  1. Log in to SurveyMonkey.
  2. Open the survey.
  3. Go to Analyze Results.
  4. Click Save As then Export file.
  5. Choose All responses data and select CSV or XLSX format.
  6. Choose to include Open-ended responses to capture any email addresses typed into text fields.
  7. Download the file.

Exporting from the email collector

  1. If you used an email collector (sent the survey via email to a list), go to Collect Responses then the email collector.
  2. Export the collector data. This includes the email addresses you sent the survey to and their response status.

Exporting contacts

  1. Go to Contacts in SurveyMonkey.
  2. Select a contact list.
  3. Export as CSV. Contact lists contain the email addresses you have uploaded or collected.

How to Extract the Email Addresses

  1. Go to bulkemailextractor.com.
  2. Select "Text and files."
  3. Upload the CSV or XLSX file exported from SurveyMonkey. Up to 25 MB per file, 100 MB per batch.
  4. Click "Extract emails."
  5. Review the results. Duplicates are removed automatically.
  6. Download as TXT for a plain list, CSV for a single-column spreadsheet, or CSV with sources.

Working with the Results

Follow up with respondents

Import the extracted list into Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign or another platform to send follow-up communications: thank-you messages, results summaries, offers or next steps.

Segment by survey

If you run multiple surveys, extract emails from each and compare. Identify respondents who participated in multiple surveys or only in one.

Consolidate survey and marketing contacts

Upload SurveyMonkey exports alongside exports from your email marketing platform. Deduplication creates a combined list of unique email addresses. Download CSV with sources and compare the source names to find addresses shared by the exports. Use the original records for person matching or status checks; the comparison only establishes that the same email string appears in multiple sources.

Verify addresses

Email addresses from survey responses may include typos if respondents typed them manually. Verification before outreach is recommended. See Best email verification services.

Things to Know

Contact data is not preserved

Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. Names, survey responses, scores, completion status and other data from the SurveyMonkey export are not carried over.

Email sources in SurveyMonkey

Email addresses can come from multiple places in a SurveyMonkey export:

  • Email collector: The email addresses you sent the survey to (these are your own contacts).
  • Email question: A survey question that asks respondents for their email address.
  • Contact information question: A built-in question type that collects name, email and other details.
  • Open-ended text responses: Respondents sometimes type email addresses in text fields even when not asked.

Anonymous responses

If a survey is set to collect anonymous responses, individual email addresses may not be included in exports. The email collector still records who was sent the survey, but the connection between sender and response may be hidden.

Web link collector

Surveys distributed via web link (URL shared publicly) do not automatically collect respondent email addresses unless the survey includes an email question. Without an email question, there are no email addresses to extract.

SurveyMonkey plans

Export options depend on the SurveyMonkey plan. Some export features require paid plans.

XLSX format

SurveyMonkey can export as XLSX. Email Extractor supports XLSX files directly.
