How to Import Extracted Emails into Campaign Monitor

On this page

Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.

Why Import into Campaign Monitor?

After extracting email addresses from files using Email Extractor, you may want to bring them into Campaign Monitor for email marketing. Campaign Monitor is an email marketing platform known for its drag-and-drop email builder, branded templates, marketing automations, transactional emails and detailed analytics. It is popular with agencies and businesses that manage email marketing for multiple brands or clients.

Importing an extracted email list into Campaign Monitor lets you add subscribers to lists, send campaigns and set up automation journeys.

Before You Import

Prepare the file

Email Extractor produces a file with email addresses only. Campaign Monitor accepts CSV and TXT imports. Email is the only required field.

  1. Extract email addresses using Email Extractor at bulkemailextractor.com.
  2. Download the results as CSV or TXT.
  3. The file contains one email address per row. This is ready for Campaign Monitor import.

If you have names or custom data in a separate file, combine the files in a spreadsheet application before importing. Campaign Monitor supports name, date and custom fields during import.

Choose or create a list

Campaign Monitor organises subscribers into lists. Each list has its own subscribers, campaigns and settings. Before importing, choose an existing list or create a new one. Creating a dedicated list helps track the origin and engagement of imported subscribers.

Consider verification

If the extracted emails come from old files or uncertain sources, verify the list before importing. Campaign Monitor may reject imports or restrict your account if bounce rates are high. See Best email verification services.

How to Import

  1. Log in to Campaign Monitor.
  2. Go to Lists & Subscribers.
  3. Select the list you want to import into, or create a new list.
  4. Click Add subscribers > Import subscribers.
  5. Choose Upload a file and select your CSV or TXT file.
  6. Campaign Monitor shows a field mapping screen. Map the email column to the Email field.
  7. Choose whether to resubscribe inactive subscribers (this is off by default and should generally stay off).
  8. Confirm that you have permission to email these subscribers.
  9. Start the import.
  10. Campaign Monitor processes the file and shows a summary of subscribers added, updated and skipped.

After Import

Review the import report

Campaign Monitor provides a detailed import report showing new subscribers, existing subscribers updated, duplicates, bounced addresses and invalid addresses. Review these numbers.

Send a test campaign

Before sending a full campaign to imported subscribers, send a small test. Monitor open rate, bounce rate, spam complaints and unsubscribes.

Set up segments

Campaign Monitor supports segments based on subscriber data, activity and custom fields. Create a segment for imported subscribers to track their engagement separately from organically acquired subscribers.

Check automation triggers

If the list you imported into has active automation journeys (triggered by list subscription), imported subscribers may enter those journeys. Review your automation triggers before importing.

Things to Know

Subscriber-centric within lists

Campaign Monitor manages subscribers at the list level. The same email address can exist on multiple lists as separate subscriber records. Each list has its own unsubscribe settings.

Unsubscribes are permanent per list

If a subscriber previously unsubscribed from a Campaign Monitor list, importing their email address into that same list does not re-subscribe them. Campaign Monitor respects the original unsubscribe. However, importing into a different list creates a new subscriber record on that list.

Pricing

Campaign Monitor charges based on the number of subscribers across all lists and the number of emails sent. Importing subscribers increases your billable count. The same email address on multiple lists counts once for billing purposes.

No enrichment

Campaign Monitor does not automatically look up names, companies or other information for imported email addresses. Imported subscribers contain only the data you provide.

Branded templates

Campaign Monitor is known for its branded template builder. Imported subscribers receive campaigns using these templates, which apply your brand colours, fonts and layout automatically.

Agency features

Campaign Monitor has agency-specific features (managing multiple clients, white-label reporting, reseller billing). If you manage client accounts, import subscribers into the correct client account and list.

Resubscribe option

During import, Campaign Monitor offers an option to resubscribe inactive subscribers. This is off by default. Turning it on re-subscribes people who previously unsubscribed, which may violate their preferences and applicable regulations.

Suppression lists

Campaign Monitor maintains suppression lists of bounced and complained addresses. These addresses are skipped during import regardless of what you upload.
