How to Extract Emails from a Campaign Monitor Export
On this page
Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.
Why Extract from Campaign Monitor?
Campaign Monitor is an email marketing platform used by businesses, agencies and nonprofits to send branded email campaigns, manage subscribers and track engagement. It stores subscriber records that include email addresses, names, custom fields, segments and engagement data. Subscribers are typically added through sign-up forms, API integrations, manual imports and third-party tools.
Extracting email addresses from Campaign Monitor data is useful in several scenarios.
Migrating to another platform. When switching from Campaign Monitor to a different email marketing service, a clean email list provides a starting point for the new platform or a verification reference after migration.
Consolidating across lists. Campaign Monitor organises subscribers into lists. If you manage multiple lists (one per brand, product line, client or audience segment), extracting from all lists and deduplicating reveals your total unique email-address count.
This counts distinct email strings using case-insensitive matching, not distinct people. One person may have multiple addresses, and shared addresses may represent several people.
Agency handoffs. Agencies that manage Campaign Monitor accounts for clients sometimes need to extract and hand off subscriber lists when an engagement ends or a client moves to a different agency.
Comparing with other systems. You may want to identify which Campaign Monitor subscribers exist in your CRM, which are missing from your ecommerce platform, or which contacts across systems are not receiving campaigns.
How to Export from Campaign Monitor
Campaign Monitor allows you to export subscribers from each list.
Exporting a subscriber list
- Log in to Campaign Monitor.
- Go to Lists & Subscribers.
- Select the list you want to export.
- Click the Export option.
- Choose to export active subscribers, unsubscribed, bounced, or all subscribers.
- Campaign Monitor generates a CSV file for download.
Repeat for each list you want to extract from.
Exporting a segment
If you need subscribers from a specific segment within a list:
- Go to the list and open the segment.
- Use the export option from the segment view, if available.
- Alternatively, export the full list and filter the CSV by the segment criteria in a spreadsheet application.
Export fields
Campaign Monitor subscriber exports typically include: email address, name, date subscribed, subscriber status and any custom fields defined on the list (company, location, preferences, etc.). The exact columns depend on the custom fields configured for each list.
How to Extract the Email Addresses
- Go to bulkemailextractor.com.
- Select "Text and files."
- Upload the CSV file (or files, if you exported from multiple lists). Up to 25 MB per file, 100 MB per batch.
- Click "Extract emails."
- Review the results. Duplicates are removed automatically.
- Download as TXT for a plain list, CSV for a single-column spreadsheet, or CSV with sources to see which export file each address came from.
Working with the Results
Track list membership
If you export each Campaign Monitor list separately and upload all files in one extraction, downloading as CSV with sources shows which list each address belonged to. Compare all source names on each address to inspect overlap between the exported lists; confirm subscription status in Campaign Monitor.
Agency migrations
When handing off a client's subscribers, extract from all the client's Campaign Monitor lists to produce one deduplicated list. This gives the client (or their new agency) a clean starting point regardless of how lists were structured in Campaign Monitor.
Combine with CRM or ecommerce data
Upload your Campaign Monitor export alongside a customer export from your CRM (Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive) or ecommerce platform (Shopify, WooCommerce). Deduplication creates a combined list of unique email addresses. Download CSV with sources and compare the source names to find addresses shared by the exports. Use the original campaign records to measure engagement frequency; repeated address text is not a count of human opens or clicks.
Verify before importing elsewhere
If the Campaign Monitor account has been running for years, some subscriber addresses may have gone inactive. Run the extracted list through an email verification service before importing into a new platform, especially if the new platform monitors bounce rates closely. See Best email verification services.
Things to Know
Column headers are not extracted
CSV column headers from Campaign Monitor are text, not email addresses, so they do not appear in the extracted results.
Subscriber data is not preserved
Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. Names, custom fields, subscription dates and engagement data from the Campaign Monitor export are not carried over. If you need those fields in your new platform, import the original CSV directly.
Suppressed subscribers
Campaign Monitor maintains suppression lists of subscribers who have unsubscribed, bounced or complained. Depending on your export selection, these may or may not be included. If they are included, do not re-subscribe them on another platform. Check the subscriber status in the original export.
Multi-client accounts
Campaign Monitor supports agency-style accounts where one login manages multiple clients. Each client has its own lists. Make sure you are exporting from the correct client's lists, not mixing subscribers across clients.
Transactional email contacts
If you use Campaign Monitor's transactional email feature (Smart Transactional), the recipients of transactional emails are tracked separately and may not appear in your subscriber list exports. Transactional recipients are not necessarily subscribers.
