How to Extract Emails from a Mailchimp Export

Why Extract from a Mailchimp Export?

Mailchimp stores subscriber data in audience lists (formerly called lists). Each audience contains email addresses along with subscriber details such as names, tags, signup dates, engagement scores, merge fields and subscription status. There are several reasons you might need just the email addresses from this data.

Migrating to another platform. When moving from Mailchimp to a different email marketing service, you may need a clean list of email addresses to import. Some platforms accept a simple email-only list more reliably than a multi-column CSV with Mailchimp-specific fields.

Consolidating lists across tools. If you use Mailchimp alongside another email tool, CRM or contact database, extracting email addresses from each and running them through a deduplication step produces a single list of unique contacts.

Comparing lists. You may want to check which addresses exist in your Mailchimp audience but not in another system (or vice versa). Starting with email-only lists from each source makes comparison straightforward.

Cleaning up after years of use. Long-running Mailchimp accounts accumulate audiences, segments and archived contacts. Exporting everything and extracting the addresses gives you a single view of every email address the account has touched.

How to Export from Mailchimp

Mailchimp provides a built-in export function for each audience.

  1. Log in to Mailchimp and go to Audience.
  2. If you have multiple audiences, select the one you want to export from the Current audience dropdown.
  3. Click All contacts.
  4. Click Export Audience (or Export depending on your interface version). Mailchimp prepares a ZIP file containing CSV files.
  5. Download the ZIP and unzip it.

The export typically produces several CSV files:

  • subscribed_members.csv contains currently subscribed contacts.
  • unsubscribed_members.csv contains contacts who unsubscribed.
  • cleaned_members.csv contains addresses Mailchimp has marked as cleaned (hard bounces, repeated soft bounces).
  • nonsubscribed_members.csv contains contacts added via e-commerce or API integrations who never opted in to email.

Each CSV includes columns for email address, first name, last name, tags, signup date, IP address, engagement rating and any custom merge fields you have configured.

You can also export a specific segment or tagged group rather than the full audience by filtering before exporting.

How to Extract the Email Addresses

  1. Go to bulkemailextractor.com.
  2. Select "Text and files."
  3. Upload the CSV files from the Mailchimp export. You can upload all of them at once (subscribed, unsubscribed, cleaned, nonsubscribed) or only the ones you need. Up to 25 MB per file, 100 MB per batch.
  4. Click "Extract emails."
  5. Review the results. Duplicates are removed automatically, so if an address appears in more than one CSV file, it will appear only once in the output.
  6. Download as TXT for a plain list, CSV for a single-column spreadsheet, or CSV with sources to see which Mailchimp export file each address came from.

Working with the Results

Identify overlap between files

If you download as CSV with sources, you can see which addresses came from which export file. An address in both subscribed_members.csv and nonsubscribed_members.csv may indicate a contact who subscribed through one channel and was added through another.

Separate subscribed from unsubscribed

Because Email Extractor's CSV-with-sources download shows the source file for each address, you can sort or filter the results by source to keep subscribed and unsubscribed contacts in separate groups. This matters for migration: importing unsubscribed contacts as active subscribers into a new platform would ignore their opt-out.

Combine with other lists

Upload Mailchimp export files alongside exports from other tools (HubSpot, Constant Contact, Salesforce, a CRM, a spreadsheet of contacts collected at events) in a single extraction. Email Extractor deduplicates across all uploaded files, giving you a single list of unique addresses from every source.

Check what you are migrating

Before importing into a new email platform, review the extracted list. Mailchimp's cleaned_members.csv contains addresses that have hard-bounced. Importing those into a new platform will generate bounces again and can harm your sender reputation. Consider excluding addresses from the cleaned file unless you have a reason to retry them.

Things to Know

Column headers are not extracted

CSV column headers like "Email Address" or "First Name" are text, not email addresses, so they do not appear in the extracted results. You do not need to remove them before uploading.

Names and other fields are not preserved

Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. Subscriber names, tags, signup dates, engagement scores and custom merge fields from the Mailchimp export are not carried over. If you need those fields in your new platform, import the original Mailchimp CSV directly rather than the extracted list.

Multiple audiences

If your Mailchimp account has multiple audiences, export each one separately and upload them all in a single extraction. Deduplication creates a combined list of unique email addresses. Download CSV with sources and compare the source names to find addresses shared by the exports. Confirm subscription or membership status in the original records; matching addresses alone do not establish a current active membership.

Archived campaigns

Mailchimp does not include recipient lists in campaign exports. The audience export captures the contacts, not the history of which campaigns were sent to whom.

ZIP files

Mailchimp delivers its export as a ZIP file. Unzip it first before uploading the CSV files inside. Email Extractor does not process ZIP files directly. See Can I extract emails from a ZIP file?.
