How to Extract Email Addresses from ZIP Archives

On this page

ZIP Files Are Not Directly Supported

Email Extractor does not read ZIP archives. Uploading a .zip file will not produce results. You need to unzip the archive first and then upload the individual files inside it.

This also applies to other compressed formats like .rar, .7z and .tar.gz. Extract the contents first, then work with the files inside.

Renaming a ZIP file's extension does not convert it. Changing .zip to .txt or any other supported extension will not make the file readable. The file must be actually unzipped.

Extraction Steps

  1. Locate the .zip file on your computer.
  2. Unzip it using your operating system's built-in tools or an application like 7-Zip or The Unarchiver.
    • Windows: Right-click the file and select "Extract All".
    • macOS: Double-click the file. The contents appear in a new folder.
    • Linux: Right-click and select "Extract Here", or run unzip archive.zip in the terminal.
  3. Open the extracted folder and identify files in supported formats.
  4. Open Email Extractor.
  5. Select Text and files.
  6. Upload the supported files from the extracted folder. You can select multiple files at once, up to 100 MB total and 25 MB per file.
  7. Click Extract emails.
  8. Review the results and download as TXT, CSV or CSV with sources.

Supported File Types Inside a ZIP

After unzipping, look for files with these extensions:

Format Extensions
Plain text .txt, .tsv, .csv, .log, .md
Web .html, .htm, .xml, .json
Documents .docx
Spreadsheets .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, .xls, .ods
Email files .msg, .eml
Contacts .vcf
PDFs .pdf

Skip files that are not in a supported format. Binary files, images, executables and database files will not produce useful results.

Common ZIP Sources

Data exports. Services like Slack, LinkedIn, Google Takeout and Notion deliver exports as ZIP archives containing JSON, CSV, HTML or Markdown files.

Conference materials. Event organisers sometimes distribute attendee lists, schedules and speaker information as a ZIP download containing PDFs and spreadsheets.

Project archives. Shared project folders compressed for transfer often contain documents, spreadsheets and text files with contact information.

Email backups. Exported email archives may arrive as a ZIP containing individual EML or MSG files.

Example

A conference organiser sends a file called summit-2026-materials.zip. After unzipping, the folder contains:

summit-2026-materials/
  attendees.xlsx
  speakers.pdf
  schedule.html
  photos/
    group-photo.jpg

Upload attendees.xlsx, speakers.pdf and schedule.html to Email Extractor. Skip group-photo.jpg (images are not supported). The tool extracts addresses from all three files, removes duplicates and presents a single list.

Downloading as CSV with sources shows which file each address came from:

email,source
keynote@example.com,speakers.pdf
organiser@example.org,attendees.xlsx
info@example.net,schedule.html

Working with Large Archives

If a ZIP contains many files:

  • Sort by file type and upload supported formats in batches within the 100 MB limit.
  • Use CSV with sources downloads to track which batch and file each address came from.
  • After extracting from all batches, merge the lists and remove any duplicates that appear across batches.

Nested ZIP Files

If the archive contains ZIP files inside it, unzip those inner archives as well. Each level of compression must be extracted before the actual content files are accessible.

MBOX Files Inside ZIP Archives

Google Takeout and other email export services often deliver MBOX files inside a ZIP. MBOX is also not directly supported by Email Extractor. After unzipping, convert the MBOX file to individual EML files before extracting. The MBOX extraction guide covers this conversion step.
