How to Extract Emails from an ActiveCampaign Export
On this page
Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.
Why Extract from an ActiveCampaign Export?
ActiveCampaign is an email marketing and marketing automation platform that stores subscriber data in contact lists. Each contact record includes an email address along with names, tags, custom fields, automation history, deal information and engagement data. Over time, an ActiveCampaign account accumulates contacts across multiple lists, automations and pipelines.
Extracting just the email addresses from an ActiveCampaign export is useful for several scenarios.
Migrating to another platform. When switching from ActiveCampaign to a different email marketing service or CRM, a clean email list provides a reliable cross-reference for the migration.
Consolidating contacts. If you use ActiveCampaign alongside other tools (a separate CRM, a form builder, a support desk), extracting from each and deduplicating reveals your total unique email-address count.
This counts distinct email strings using case-insensitive matching, not distinct people. One person may have multiple addresses, and shared addresses may represent several people.
Comparing lists. You may want to check which addresses exist in ActiveCampaign but not in another system, or identify contacts that should be in ActiveCampaign but are not.
Cleaning up. Long-running ActiveCampaign accounts accumulate contacts from old campaigns, expired automations and test sends. An extracted list gives you a clear count of all unique addresses in the system.
How to Export from ActiveCampaign
ActiveCampaign allows you to export contacts from the Contacts section.
- Log in to ActiveCampaign.
- Go to Contacts.
- Apply any filters or segments you want. You can filter by list, tag, status, custom field values, or other criteria.
- Select the contacts you want to export. You can select all contacts matching your filter, or select individual contacts.
- Click Export from the bulk actions menu.
- Choose which fields to include in the export. The email address is always included.
- ActiveCampaign generates a CSV file. Download it when ready.
Exporting by list
If you want to export contacts from a specific list:
- Go to Lists in the left sidebar.
- Select the list you want to export.
- Click Export (or select the export option from the list's menu).
This produces a CSV file containing only the contacts on that list.
Export fields
The exported CSV includes the fields you selected during export. Common fields include email, first name, last name, phone, tags (comma-separated), lists (comma-separated), subscription date, last activity date and custom fields. Tags and list names appear as text values, not email addresses, so they do not interfere with extraction.
How to Extract the Email Addresses
- Go to bulkemailextractor.com.
- Select "Text and files."
- Upload the CSV file (or files, if you exported from multiple lists). Up to 25 MB per file, 100 MB per batch.
- Click "Extract emails."
- Review the results. Duplicates are removed automatically. If the same contact appears on multiple lists, their address appears only once.
- Download as TXT for a plain list, CSV for a single-column spreadsheet, or CSV with sources to see which export file each address came from.
Working with the Results
Track which list each contact came from
If you export each ActiveCampaign list separately and upload all the CSV files in a single extraction, downloading as CSV with sources shows which list's export file each address appeared in. This helps you see how contacts are distributed across your lists.
Combine with other platforms
Upload your ActiveCampaign export alongside exports from other tools (Mailchimp, Constant Contact, HubSpot, a CRM) in a single extraction. Deduplication reveals how many unique contacts you have across all platforms and identifies contacts that exist in one system but not another.
Identify inactive contacts
If you export ActiveCampaign contacts with engagement data (last activity date, open rate), you can review the original CSV to identify contacts who have not engaged in a long time. The extracted email list is useful for sending these addresses through a verification service to confirm they are still deliverable. See Best email verification services.
Prepare for migration
When migrating from ActiveCampaign to another platform, the extracted email list serves as a checklist. After the migration, extract from the new platform and compare the two lists to verify that all contacts transferred successfully.
Things to Know
Column headers are not extracted
CSV column headers like "Email" or "First Name" are text, not email addresses, so they do not appear in the extracted results.
Names, tags and automation data are not preserved
Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. Contact names, tags, list memberships, automation history, deal associations and custom fields from the ActiveCampaign export are not carried over. If you need those fields in your new platform, import the original CSV directly.
Unsubscribed and bounced contacts
ActiveCampaign's export may include contacts who have unsubscribed or whose addresses have bounced, depending on your export filters. Do not re-subscribe unsubscribed contacts on another platform. Review the subscription status in the original CSV before using the extracted list for email campaigns.
Contact vs. deal data
ActiveCampaign has both a contacts/email marketing side and a CRM/deals side. Contact email addresses are captured through the contacts export. Deal-related email addresses (if different from the contact record) would need to be exported from the deals section separately.
Account limits
Some ActiveCampaign plans have contact limits. The export captures all contacts regardless of your plan limit, which is useful for understanding total volume during a plan review or migration.
