How to Import Extracted Emails into Klaviyo
On this page
Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.
Why Import into Klaviyo?
After extracting email addresses from files using Email Extractor, you may want to bring them into Klaviyo for ecommerce email marketing, customer segmentation, automations, SMS marketing and revenue attribution. Klaviyo is an email and SMS marketing platform built specifically for ecommerce businesses. It integrates deeply with Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and other ecommerce platforms.
Importing an extracted email list into Klaviyo lets you add profiles, assign them to lists, create segments, trigger flows and send targeted campaigns.
Before You Import
Prepare the file
Email Extractor produces a file with email addresses only. Klaviyo accepts CSV imports. Email is the only required field for profile creation.
- Extract email addresses using Email Extractor at bulkemailextractor.com.
- Download the results as CSV.
- The CSV contains one email address per row. This is ready for Klaviyo import.
If you have names, purchase data or other information in a separate file and want to include them, combine the files in a spreadsheet application before importing.
Choose or create a list
Klaviyo uses lists and segments to organise profiles. Lists are static (you add profiles manually or via import). Segments are dynamic (profiles are included or excluded based on rules). Before importing, choose an existing list or create a new one. Creating a dedicated list (e.g., "Imported from extraction - Oct 2026") helps track the origin of imported profiles.
Consider verification
If the extracted emails come from old files or uncertain sources, verify the list before importing. Klaviyo monitors sender reputation closely and may restrict your account if bounce rates are high. See Best email verification services.
How to Import
- Log in to Klaviyo.
- Go to Audience > Lists & Segments.
- Select the list you want to import into, or create a new list.
- Click Import Contacts (or Manage List > Import).
- Choose Upload a file and select your CSV file.
- Klaviyo shows a field mapping screen. Map the email column to the Email field. If your file has only email addresses, it typically maps automatically.
- Review the import preview.
- Confirm that you have consent to email these contacts.
- Start the import.
- Klaviyo processes the file and shows an import summary with counts of new profiles created, existing profiles updated and any errors.
After Import
Review the import summary
Klaviyo's import report shows how many profiles were created, updated and skipped. Review the numbers to understand the quality of the imported list.
Check flow triggers
Klaviyo flows (automations) can be triggered by list membership. If the list you imported into triggers a welcome flow or other automation, imported profiles may enter that flow. Review your flow triggers and adjust if you want to exclude imported profiles.
Send a campaign
Before sending a full campaign to imported profiles, test with a small segment first. Monitor open rate, bounce rate, spam complaints and unsubscribes. Klaviyo provides detailed analytics to help you evaluate list quality.
Create segments
Klaviyo's segmentation is one of its strongest features. Create a segment for imported profiles (e.g., "Added via import on October 2026") to track their engagement separately. You can build segments based on import date, list membership, engagement level and many other conditions.
Suppress non-engaged profiles
If imported profiles do not engage with your first few campaigns (no opens or clicks), consider suppressing them or moving them to a re-engagement flow. Continuing to email non-engaged profiles hurts deliverability.
Things to Know
Klaviyo profiles
Klaviyo uses a profile-centric model. Each email address corresponds to one profile, regardless of how many lists it belongs to. Importing an email address that already has a Klaviyo profile updates that profile (adds it to the new list) rather than creating a duplicate.
Consent and suppressions
If a profile was previously suppressed in Klaviyo (unsubscribed, marked as spam, or bounced), importing that email address again does not lift the suppression. Klaviyo respects previous consent decisions. Suppressed profiles are skipped during import.
Pricing
Klaviyo charges based on the number of active profiles (profiles you can email). Importing a large list increases your active profile count and may move you to a higher billing tier. Suppressed profiles do not count toward the limit on most plans.
Ecommerce data
Klaviyo's power comes from combining email marketing with ecommerce data (purchase history, browsing behaviour, cart abandonment). Imported profiles start without this data. They begin accumulating ecommerce data only after they interact with your store while being tracked by Klaviyo.
No automatic enrichment
Klaviyo does not automatically look up names, purchase history or other details for imported email addresses. If you import email addresses only, the profiles will contain just the email address until they interact with your store or you add data through another import or integration.
List vs segment
In Klaviyo, lists are for explicit consent groups (people who opted in). Segments are for dynamic grouping based on behaviour and data. Import into a list, then create segments to target subsets. Do not import into a segment (segments are dynamic and do not accept direct imports).
Smart sending
Klaviyo's Smart Sending feature prevents sending too many emails to the same profile in a short period. This applies to imported profiles as well. If an imported profile recently received a campaign, Smart Sending may skip them on the next one.
Historical engagement
Imported profiles have no engagement history in Klaviyo. Segments based on engagement (e.g., "Opened an email in the last 30 days") will not include imported profiles until they interact with a campaign.
