How to Extract Emails from a Ghost Export
On this page
Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.
Why Extract from Ghost?
Ghost is an open-source publishing platform used by writers, journalists, newsletters and media companies. It offers membership management, newsletter sending, paid subscriptions and content publishing. Ghost stores member records that include email addresses, names, subscription status (free or paid), newsletter preferences, labels, sign-up dates and Stripe payment data for paid members.
Extracting email addresses from Ghost data is useful in several scenarios.
Migrating to another platform. When moving from Ghost to a different publishing or newsletter platform (Substack, Beehiiv, Kit, WordPress), a clean email list provides a starting point for re-building your audience on the new platform.
Backing up your member list. Your member list is the core asset of any Ghost publication. An independent backup ensures you have a copy outside of your Ghost installation, especially important if you self-host Ghost.
Combining with external sources. If you collect email addresses through other channels (a separate landing page, a course platform, social media, podcast show notes), extracting from Ghost and deduplicating with other sources shows your total unique audience size.
Verifying migration completeness. After migrating to or from Ghost, extract from both platforms and download CSV with sources to compare address membership. A missing address warrants review, but matching addresses do not confirm that subscription status, consent or other fields migrated correctly.
How to Export from Ghost
Ghost allows publication administrators to export member data.
Exporting members
- Log in to your Ghost admin panel (typically at yourdomain.com/ghost).
- Go to Members in the sidebar.
- Optionally filter members by status (free, paid, comped) or label.
- Click Export members (or the export button in the members list).
- Ghost generates a CSV file containing the selected members.
- Download the file.
Export fields
Ghost member exports typically include: email address, name, note, subscribed status (true/false for newsletter), complimentary plan status, Stripe customer ID, creation date, deletion date (if applicable) and labels. The exact columns may vary depending on your Ghost version and configuration.
Self-hosted vs Ghost(Pro)
The export process is the same whether you use Ghost(Pro) (Ghost's managed hosting) or a self-hosted Ghost installation. Self-hosted users should ensure their Ghost installation is up to date for the latest export features.
How to Extract the Email Addresses
- Go to bulkemailextractor.com.
- Select "Text and files."
- Upload the CSV file. Up to 25 MB per file, 100 MB per batch.
- Click "Extract emails."
- Review the results. Duplicates are removed automatically.
- Download as TXT for a plain list, CSV for a single-column spreadsheet, or CSV with sources.
Working with the Results
Migrate to another newsletter platform
The extracted email list can be imported into Substack, Beehiiv, Kit, MailerLite, Buttondown or any other newsletter platform that accepts CSV imports. Since Email Extractor outputs email addresses only, free/paid status and labels will not carry over. Use the original Ghost CSV for that distinction if the destination platform supports it.
Combine with WordPress subscribers
If you previously ran your site on WordPress with a newsletter plugin (Jetrpack, MailPoet, Newsletter), export from both Ghost and the WordPress plugin. Upload both files and extract. Deduplication creates a combined list of unique email addresses. Download CSV with sources and compare the source names to find addresses shared by the exports. Confirm subscription or membership status in the original records; matching addresses alone do not establish a current active membership.
Audit your member count
Ghost charges Ghost(Pro) users based on member count. Extracting and deduplicating your member list gives you an independent count of unique email addresses. This is also useful for comparing with your email sending service (Mailgun, Postmark, or your custom SMTP provider) to ensure the numbers align.
Verify after content import
Ghost supports importing content and members from other platforms (WordPress, Substack, Medium). After an import, export the resulting member list, extract, and compare with the original source. Addresses present in the source but missing from Ghost indicate import issues.
Things to Know
Column headers are not extracted
CSV column headers from Ghost are text, not email addresses, so they do not appear in the extracted results.
Member data is not preserved
Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. Names, notes, subscription status, labels, Stripe customer IDs, creation dates and other metadata from the Ghost export are not carried over. If you need those fields on the new platform, import the original CSV directly.
Newsletter subscription status
Ghost tracks two separate statuses: membership (whether someone is a member) and newsletter subscription (whether they opted in to receive emails). A member can exist in Ghost but have newsletters turned off. The export includes both types. Check the subscribed column in the original CSV before using addresses for email campaigns.
Paid members and Stripe
Paid member subscriptions in Ghost are managed through Stripe. The CSV export includes Stripe customer IDs but not payment details. Migrating paid members to a new platform requires handling Stripe subscriptions separately. Email extraction gives you the addresses but not the billing relationship.
Deleted members
Ghost may include deleted members in some export views (they have a deletion date). These addresses will appear in the extracted results. Review the original CSV if you want to exclude them.
Ghost's data portability
Ghost emphasises data portability as part of its open-source philosophy. There are no restrictions on exporting your member list, and the export includes all member data Ghost stores.
