How to Extract Emails from a Buttondown Export
On this page
Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.
Why Extract from Buttondown?
Buttondown is a newsletter platform designed for writers and creators who want a simple, privacy-focused tool for sending newsletters. It supports Markdown editing, paid subscriptions, automation, tags and integrations with tools like Zapier and Notion. Buttondown stores subscriber data including email addresses, subscription status, tags, metadata, notes and subscription dates.
Extracting email addresses from Buttondown data is useful in several scenarios.
Migrating to another newsletter platform. When switching from Buttondown to Substack, Ghost, Beehiiv, Kit (ConvertKit), Mailchimp or another platform, extracting email addresses helps verify migration completeness.
Consolidating subscriber lists. If you run newsletters on multiple platforms or collect contacts through different channels, extracting from each and deduplicating reveals your total unique email-address count.
This counts distinct email strings using case-insensitive matching, not distinct people. One person may have multiple addresses, and shared addresses may represent several people.
Backing up subscribers. Before making account changes, switching plans or restructuring your newsletter, extracting ensures you have an independent copy of every subscriber's email address.
Cross-referencing with other tools. Comparing extracted Buttondown subscribers with exports from your website, CRM or other marketing tools shows overlap and identifies subscribers unique to your newsletter.

The Buttondown export typically includes: email address, subscription status (regular, premium, unsubscribed, unactivated), creation date, tags, notes, metadata and subscriber type (free or paid). The exact columns depend on your Buttondown configuration and plan.

- Review the results. Duplicates are removed automatically.

Working with the Results
Migrate to another newsletter platform
Import the extracted list into your new newsletter platform. Most platforms (Substack, Ghost, Beehiiv, Kit, Mailchimp) accept CSV imports with email addresses. Since the extraction produces email addresses only, tags and subscription status are not carried over. Import the original Buttondown CSV directly if you need to preserve subscriber metadata.
Combine with website contacts
If your website collects email addresses through forms, popups or other methods separate from Buttondown, extract from both sources and deduplicate. This shows how many of your website contacts are also newsletter subscribers.
Identify free vs paid subscribers
If you use Buttondown's paid subscription feature, the original export includes subscription type. While extraction does not preserve this data, you can filter the original CSV by subscription type before uploading to create separate lists of free and paid subscriber email addresses.
Verify addresses
Newsletter subscriber lists can accumulate over time. Run the extracted list through a verification service to identify addresses that are no longer active, especially before migrating to a new platform where import quality affects your sender reputation. See Best email verification services.
Things to Know
Column headers are not extracted
CSV column headers from Buttondown are text, not email addresses, so they do not appear in the extracted results.
Subscriber data is not preserved
Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. Tags, notes, metadata, subscription status, subscription type (free/paid), creation dates and other fields from the Buttondown export are not carried over.
Unsubscribed and unactivated subscribers
Depending on your export settings, the Buttondown export may include subscribers who have unsubscribed or who never confirmed their subscription (unactivated). Their email addresses will appear in the extracted results. Do not re-subscribe people who have unsubscribed. Check the status column in the original export before using the full extracted list for email sending.
Paid subscribers
If you operate a paid newsletter on Buttondown, the export includes both free and paid subscribers. The extraction does not distinguish between them. If you migrate to another platform with paid subscriptions, you will need the original export to identify which subscribers have paid subscriptions.
Buttondown's simplicity
Buttondown is intentionally simple compared to full email marketing platforms. The export is straightforward and typically produces a clean CSV that is easy to work with.
API access
Buttondown offers an API for programmatic access to subscriber data. For most users, the CSV export is sufficient. The API is useful for ongoing integrations or automated workflows.
