How to Extract Emails from Intercom Contacts
On this page
Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.
Why Extract from Intercom?
Intercom is a customer communication platform that provides live chat, chatbots, a help desk, a knowledge base, product tours, outbound messaging and a customer data platform. It is used by SaaS companies, ecommerce businesses and service companies to communicate with customers and leads through their website, app and email.
Intercom stores contacts (users and leads) who have interacted with your chat, submitted their email, been identified through your app or been imported. Extracting email addresses from Intercom data is useful for consolidating customer data across tools, importing into an email marketing platform, deduplicating against other sources, migrating to a different platform or creating a backup.
How to Export from Intercom
Exporting contacts
- Log in to Intercom.
- Go to Contacts (or People).
- Apply filters to select the contacts you want (by segment, tag, company, last seen date or other criteria).
- Click Export to download as a CSV file.
- The CSV includes email, name, company, user ID, last seen date, created date, tags, custom attributes and other fields.
Exporting a segment
- Go to Contacts.
- Select a saved segment (active users, leads, paying customers, etc.).
- Export that segment as CSV.
Data export (full)
Intercom offers a full data export for admins that includes all user and lead data. This is available in Settings under Data Management.

Working with the Results
Import into an email marketing platform
Intercom has outbound messaging features, but many teams use dedicated email marketing platforms (Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, Kit) for newsletters and marketing campaigns. The extracted list can be imported into these platforms.
Consolidate customer data
If you use Intercom alongside a CRM (HubSpot, Salesforce) and an email platform, extracting and comparing contacts across all tools reveals gaps and duplicates.
Migration
If you are moving from Intercom to another customer communication platform (Drift, Crisp, Zendesk), the extracted email list helps identify contacts to migrate.
Verify addresses
Intercom contacts may include leads who chatted months ago. Their email addresses may no longer be valid. Running the extracted list through a verification service before outreach is recommended. See Best email verification services.
Things to Know
Contact data is not preserved
Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. Names, companies, user IDs, conversation history, custom attributes, tags, segments and engagement data from the Intercom export are not carried over.
Users vs leads
Intercom distinguishes between users (identified people, typically logged-in customers) and leads (anonymous or partially identified visitors who provided their email through chat). Both types can have email addresses.
Anonymous visitors
Some Intercom contacts may be anonymous (they interacted with chat but did not provide an email). These contacts have no email and will not appear in extraction results.
Conversation data
Intercom stores conversation history (chat transcripts, email threads). This data is separate from contact data and is not included in standard contact exports.
Custom attributes
Intercom supports custom attributes on contacts (plan type, signup date, feature usage). These are included in exports but not preserved by Email Extractor.
Integrations
Intercom integrates with many tools (CRMs, email platforms, analytics, support tools). Contacts may already be synced to other tools through integrations.
Outbound messaging
Intercom supports outbound messages (in-app messages, email, push notifications, SMS). These are marketing and engagement features within the platform.
