How to Extract Emails from Jira Issues
On this page
Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.
Why Extract from Jira?
Jira is Atlassian's project management and issue tracking platform, widely used by software development teams, IT departments and business teams. It provides issue tracking, sprint planning, boards (Scrum and Kanban), workflows, reporting, roadmaps and integrations. Jira issues contain assignee, reporter and watcher email addresses, as well as email addresses mentioned in descriptions and comments.
Extracting email addresses from Jira data is useful for identifying stakeholders across projects, building contact lists for project communication, auditing who has been involved in specific issues, migrating data or consolidating contacts.
How to Export from Jira
Exporting issues as CSV
- Log in to Jira.
- Use the search or filter to find issues (by project, date range, assignee, status, etc.).
- Click Export (top right of the search results).
- Choose Export CSV (all fields) or Export CSV (current fields).
- Download the CSV file.
- The CSV includes assignee email, reporter email, and other fields.
Exporting from a board
- Open a Scrum or Kanban board.
- Use the board filter to define which issues appear.
- Go to the backlog or search view.
- Export as CSV.
Exporting from Jira Service Management
- If using Jira Service Management (help desk), go to Queues or use a filter.
- Export as CSV.
- The export includes customer (requester) email addresses.
Using the API
Jira's REST API allows exporting issue data programmatically. Use it for large exports or custom queries.

Working with the Results
Identify stakeholders
Extract all email addresses from a project's issues to see who has been involved as assignee, reporter or commenter. This helps identify stakeholders for project reviews, retrospectives or communications.
Build project contact lists
Create contact lists for cross-functional projects by extracting emails from issues that span teams.
Audit external contacts
If your Jira instance includes external customers or partners (common in Jira Service Management), extract their email addresses for customer communication.
Verify addresses
Email addresses in Jira are typically corporate addresses tied to user accounts. If users have left the organisation, their addresses may be invalid. See Best email verification services.
Things to Know
Contact data is not preserved
Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. Issue keys, summaries, statuses, priorities, projects and other Jira fields are not carried over.
Internal vs external emails
Jira exports may contain internal team email addresses and (in Service Management) external customer emails. The extraction captures all email addresses found in the file.
Display names vs emails
Depending on your Jira configuration and export settings, the CSV may show display names instead of email addresses for some fields. Check the export settings to ensure email addresses are included.
Jira Cloud vs Jira Data Center
Export options differ slightly between Jira Cloud and Jira Data Center (Server). The CSV export is available in both.
Permissions
Jira export permissions depend on your role and project permissions. Some projects may restrict data export.
Comments and descriptions
Email addresses mentioned in issue descriptions and comments are included in the CSV text and will be extracted by Email Extractor.
