How to Extract Emails from Shopify Customer Segments

Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.
Why Extract from Shopify Customer Segments?
Shopify is one of the most popular ecommerce platforms. Its customer segmentation feature lets store owners create dynamic groups based on purchase history, order count, amount spent, location, email subscription status, tags and more.
Extracting email addresses from specific customer segments is useful for importing targeted lists into email marketing platforms, sharing data with teams, running campaigns through external tools or analyzing customer behavior.
While the general Shopify customer export is covered in Extract Emails from Shopify Customers, this article focuses on segment-specific exports.
How to Export from Shopify
Exporting a customer segment
- Log in to your Shopify admin.
- Go to Customers.
- Click Segments (or use the filter bar).
- Select an existing segment or create a new one.
- Shopify displays customers matching the segment criteria.
- Click Export and choose Current page or All customers matching filter.

- Click Create segment.
- Set conditions using Shopify's segment editor:

- Preview the segment.
- Save and export.

Working with the Results
Targeted email campaigns
Import segmented customer emails into Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend or another platform for behavior-based campaigns: loyalty rewards for repeat customers, win-back offers for lapsed customers, upsell recommendations for high-value customers.
Cross-platform marketing
Run campaigns through platforms outside the Shopify ecosystem using specific customer segments.
Compare segments
Export multiple segments and upload together. Deduplication creates a combined list of unique email addresses. Download CSV with sources and compare the source names to find addresses shared by the exports. Use the original transaction records to confirm purchases and match customers; unique addresses are not a count of unique people.
Customer analysis
Export segments at regular intervals to track how group sizes change over time. A growing repeat customer segment indicates healthy retention.
Verify addresses
Active customer segments are less likely to contain invalid addresses. Lapsed customer segments may have higher rates of outdated emails. See Best email verification services.
Things to Know
Contact data is not preserved
Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. Names, addresses, order counts, amounts spent, tags and other Shopify fields are not carried over.
Dynamic segments
Shopify segments are dynamic and update automatically. The export captures customers matching the conditions at the time of export.
Email marketing consent
Shopify tracks email subscription status separately from customer records. You can segment by email_subscription_status = 'SUBSCRIBED' to export only customers who opted in.
Guest checkouts
Customers who checked out as guests may or may not appear in segments depending on whether they created a customer record.
