How to Extract Emails from Shopify Customers

On this page

Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.

Why Extract from Shopify?

Shopify is an ecommerce platform that powers online stores. It provides a website builder, product management, checkout, payment processing, shipping, inventory management, marketing tools, analytics and a point-of-sale system. Shopify stores customer data for everyone who has placed an order, created an account or subscribed to marketing.

Extracting email addresses from Shopify customer data is useful for importing into a dedicated email marketing platform, consolidating customer data with a CRM, identifying your full customer base, segmenting by purchase history or creating a backup.

How to Export from Shopify

Exporting customers

  1. Log in to the Shopify admin.
  2. Go to Customers.
  3. Apply filters (accepted marketing, order count, tags, location, etc.) if needed.
  4. Select the customers you want to export (or select all).
  5. Click Export and choose CSV.
  6. Choose to export the current page, all customers matching the filter, or all customers.
  7. Shopify emails the CSV file to your admin email address (for large exports) or downloads it directly.
  8. The CSV includes email, first name, last name, company, address, phone, total orders, total spent, tags, accepts marketing, created date and other fields.

Exporting from orders

  1. Go to Orders.
  2. Filter by date, status or other criteria.
  3. Export as CSV. Order data includes customer email addresses.

How to Extract the Email Addresses

  1. Go to bulkemailextractor.com.
  2. Select "Text and files."
  3. Upload the CSV file exported from Shopify. Up to 25 MB per file, 100 MB per batch.
  4. Click "Extract emails."
  5. Review the results. Duplicates are removed automatically.
  6. Download as TXT for a plain list, CSV for a single-column spreadsheet, or CSV with sources.

Working with the Results

Import into an email marketing platform

Shopify includes basic email marketing (Shopify Email), but many store owners use dedicated platforms (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend, ActiveCampaign) for advanced segmentation, automation and analytics. Import the extracted list into your preferred platform.

Consolidate with other data sources

If you sell on multiple channels (Shopify, Amazon, Etsy, a physical store), extract customer emails from all channels and upload together. Deduplication reveals your total unique email-address count.

This counts distinct email strings using case-insensitive matching, not distinct people. One person may have multiple addresses, and shared addresses may represent several people.

Marketing vs non-marketing contacts

Shopify tracks whether customers have opted in to marketing emails. The full customer export includes both marketing-accepted and non-marketing contacts. If you only want marketing-accepted contacts, filter in Shopify before exporting.

Verify addresses

Customer emails from Shopify orders are generally valid since they receive order confirmations. However, some may have become inactive. Verification before marketing campaigns to lapsed customers is recommended. See Best email verification services.

Things to Know

Contact data is not preserved

Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. Names, addresses, order history, total spent, tags and other fields from the Shopify export are not carried over.

Marketing consent

Shopify's customer export includes an "Accepts Marketing" field. Email Extractor does not distinguish between marketing and non-marketing contacts. If consent matters for your use case, filter in Shopify before exporting.

Guest checkouts

Shopify supports guest checkout (no account required). Guest checkout customers still provide an email for order confirmation and appear in the customer list.

Multiple stores

If you operate multiple Shopify stores, export from each store separately and upload all files together for deduplication.

Shopify Email

Shopify Email is Shopify's built-in email marketing tool. It uses the same customer data. For more advanced features, use a dedicated platform.

Klaviyo integration

Klaviyo is the most popular email marketing platform for Shopify stores. If Klaviyo integration is active, customer data may already be synced.

Customer tags

Shopify supports tags on customer records for segmentation. Tags are included in exports but not preserved by Email Extractor.

Privacy

Customer email addresses were collected during checkout. Marketing use should comply with your store's privacy policy and applicable regulations. See CAN-SPAM compliance guide.
