How to Extract Emails from Shopify Abandoned Checkouts
On this page
Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.
Why Extract from Shopify Abandoned Checkouts?
Shopify tracks abandoned checkouts: sessions where a customer entered their email address during checkout but did not complete the purchase. These contacts showed strong purchase intent. Recovering even a fraction of abandoned checkouts can significantly increase revenue.
Extracting email addresses from Shopify abandoned checkout data is useful for creating recovery campaigns in external email marketing platforms, consolidating abandoned cart contacts across stores, analyzing abandonment patterns or building retargeting lists.
How to Export from Shopify
Exporting abandoned checkouts
- Log in to Shopify admin.
- Go to Orders then Abandoned checkouts.
- Filter by date range if needed.
- Click Export to download a CSV file.
- The CSV includes email, products in cart, cart value, date, recovery status and other details.
Using Shopify's built-in recovery
Shopify has built-in abandoned checkout recovery emails. However, if you want to use a more advanced email marketing platform for recovery sequences, exporting the data is necessary.
How to Extract the Email Addresses
- Go to bulkemailextractor.com.
- Select "Text and files."
- Upload the CSV file exported from Shopify. Up to 25 MB per file, 100 MB per batch.
- Click "Extract emails."
- Review the results. Duplicates are removed automatically.
- Download as TXT for a plain list, CSV for a single-column spreadsheet, or CSV with sources.
Working with the Results
Build recovery campaigns
Import the extracted list into Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend or another platform for multi-step abandoned cart recovery sequences.
Segment by timeframe
Export abandoned checkouts by date range and extract each separately. Recent abandoners are more likely to convert than older ones.
Compare with completed orders
Upload abandoned checkout exports alongside your customer export. Deduplication creates a combined list of unique email addresses. Download CSV with sources and compare the source names to find addresses shared by the exports. Use the original records for person matching or status checks; the comparison only establishes that the same email string appears in multiple sources.
Verify addresses
Abandoned checkout emails were entered during checkout and are usually valid. Some may have been mistyped, which may have contributed to the abandonment. See Best email verification services.
Things to Know
Contact data is not preserved
Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. Cart contents, values, dates, recovery statuses and other data are not carried over.
Not all abandoners provide email
Customers must enter their email address during checkout for it to be captured. Those who abandoned before entering their email will not appear in the export.
Already recovered
Some abandoned checkouts may have already been recovered (the customer returned and completed the purchase). Filter by recovery status before exporting if you want only unrecovered contacts.
Shopify abandoned checkout retention
Shopify stores abandoned checkout data for a limited period (typically 3 months for basic plans). Export regularly.
Consent considerations
Customers who entered their email during checkout started a purchase process. Sending recovery emails is generally acceptable, but adding them to a general marketing list may require explicit consent.
