How to Extract Emails from Shopify Order Notification Emails

On this page

Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.

Why Extract from Shopify Order Notifications?

When a customer places an order on a Shopify store, the store owner receives an order notification email containing the customer's email address, order details, shipping address and payment summary. If you have accumulated many order notification emails in your inbox, extracting customer email addresses from them is a way to build a customer list without logging into Shopify.

This is useful when you have limited Shopify access, when you want to cross-reference inbox records with your Shopify dashboard, when you need a quick list from a specific date range you can filter in your email client, or when you are migrating away from Shopify and want to capture customer contacts from your email archive.

How to Get the Notification Emails

From your email client

  1. Open Gmail, Outlook or your email client.
  2. Search for Shopify order notification emails. Common subject lines include "You have a new order" or "[Store Name] - New order #1234."
  3. Select the emails from the date range you want.

Saving as EML or MSG

  1. In Gmail: Open the email, click the three-dot menu, select Download message to save as .eml.
  2. In Outlook: Drag the email to a folder to save as .msg, or use File > Save As.
  3. Save multiple notification emails to a folder.

Saving as text

  1. Select and copy the email body text.
  2. Paste into a text file (.txt).
  3. Repeat for each notification email, or select multiple emails and copy their contents.

Exporting from Gmail

  1. Use Google Takeout to export your Gmail data.
  2. The export includes emails in MBOX format.
  3. Convert MBOX to individual EML files before uploading to Email Extractor. MBOX is not directly supported.

How to Extract the Email Addresses

  1. Go to bulkemailextractor.com.
  2. Select "Text and files."
  3. Upload the EML, MSG or TXT files containing order notifications. Up to 25 MB per file, 100 MB per batch.
  4. Click "Extract emails."
  5. Review the results. Duplicates are removed automatically.
  6. Download as TXT for a plain list, CSV for a single-column spreadsheet, or CSV with sources.

Working with the Results

Build a customer list

If you do not have easy access to Shopify's customer export, order notification emails provide an alternative source for customer email addresses.

Cross-reference with Shopify

Compare the extracted list with your Shopify customer export to identify any discrepancies or missing contacts.

Import into email marketing

Import extracted customer emails into Klaviyo, Mailchimp or another platform for post-purchase campaigns, review requests and product recommendations.

Verify addresses

Customer emails from order notifications are the addresses used for the purchase and are usually valid. See Best email verification services.

Things to Know

Multiple email addresses per notification

Order notification emails may contain the customer's email address, your store's email address and Shopify system addresses. The extracted list will include all of them. Review and filter out your own and Shopify's addresses.

Contact data is not preserved

Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. Customer names, order numbers, amounts, products and shipping details are not carried over.

EML and MSG limitations

Email Extractor processes the text content of EML and MSG files. It does not extract email addresses from attachments within those files.

MBOX not directly supported

If your email export is in MBOX format, convert to individual EML files first. Renaming the file extension does not convert the format.

Shopify customer export is more reliable

For a complete and clean customer list, exporting directly from Shopify admin (Customers > Export) is recommended. This notification email approach is best used when Shopify access is limited.
