How to Import Extracted Emails into Constant Contact

On this page

Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.

Why Import into Constant Contact?

After extracting email addresses from files using Email Extractor, you may want to bring them into Constant Contact for email campaigns, newsletters, event promotions or drip sequences. Constant Contact is an email marketing platform popular with small businesses, nonprofits and event organisers for its ease of use and built-in features for contact management, email design and reporting.

Importing an extracted email list into Constant Contact lets you add contacts to lists, send campaigns and track engagement.

Before You Import

Prepare the file

Email Extractor produces a file with email addresses only. Constant Contact accepts CSV uploads with multiple columns, but email is the only field required for import.

  1. Extract email addresses using Email Extractor at bulkemailextractor.com.
  2. Download the results as CSV.
  3. The CSV contains one email address per row. This is ready for Constant Contact import as-is.

If you have names or other data in a separate file and want to include them, combine the files in a spreadsheet application before importing. Constant Contact can map columns to first name, last name, company, phone and other contact fields during import.

Choose or create a list

Constant Contact organises contacts into lists. Before importing, decide which list to add the contacts to. You can import into an existing list or create a new one during the import process. Creating a dedicated list (e.g., "Extracted from conference files - Oct 2026") helps you track where these contacts came from.

Verify the list

If the extracted emails come from old files or sources of uncertain quality, consider running the list through an email verification service before importing. High bounce rates from imported contacts can harm your sender reputation and may trigger Constant Contact's anti-abuse systems. See Best email verification services.

How to Import

  1. Log in to Constant Contact.
  2. Go to Contacts.
  3. Click Add Contacts (or Upload from file, depending on your interface version).
  4. Select Upload from file and choose your CSV file.
  5. Constant Contact previews the data. Map the email column to the Email Address field. If your file has only one column, it maps automatically.
  6. Select the list to add these contacts to, or create a new list.
  7. Choose how to handle contacts that already exist in your account. Constant Contact can skip existing contacts, update them, or add them to the new list while keeping their existing list memberships.
  8. Review and confirm the import.
  9. Constant Contact processes the upload. The time depends on the number of contacts. You can check progress in the Contacts section.

What happens during import

Constant Contact runs several checks during import:

Format validation. Addresses that do not follow standard email format are rejected.

Duplicate detection. If an email address already exists in your Constant Contact account, it is handled according to your import settings (skipped or updated).

Do-not-mail list check. Constant Contact maintains an account-level do-not-mail list containing addresses that have unsubscribed, bounced or complained. Addresses on this list are not re-added to active lists, even if they appear in your import file. This prevents re-subscribing people who previously opted out.

Role-based address filtering. Some email platforms flag role-based addresses (info@, admin@, support@) during import. Constant Contact may flag or skip these.

After Import

Tag or segment the imported contacts

Use Constant Contact's tagging or segmentation features to mark imported contacts. For example, apply a tag like "Imported Oct 2026" or "Conference contacts." This helps you send targeted campaigns to this group or exclude them from certain sends.

Send a re-engagement campaign

If the extracted emails have not received communication from you recently, do not send them a regular marketing campaign immediately. Start with a re-engagement or re-introduction email that explains who you are and why you are reaching out. Include an easy unsubscribe option. This reduces spam complaints and helps you identify contacts who are no longer interested.

Monitor bounce rates

After your first send to imported contacts, check the bounce rate. If it is unusually high (above 2-3%), some addresses in the list may be outdated. Remove bounced addresses from the list and consider verifying the remaining addresses.

Review engagement

After a few campaigns, review the engagement metrics (opens, clicks) for imported contacts. Contacts that never open or click may be inactive addresses. Removing persistently unengaged contacts keeps your list healthy and your deliverability high.

Things to Know

Constant Contact's import limits

Constant Contact may limit the number of contacts you can import at once or per day, depending on your plan and account standing. If your import is very large, you may need to split it into batches.

Compliance requirements

Constant Contact requires that imported contacts have given consent to receive email from you. Their acceptable use policy prohibits importing purchased, rented or scraped email lists. Make sure the email addresses you extracted were collected with appropriate consent for the type of communication you plan to send. See Email consent types explained.

Do-not-mail list

Constant Contact's do-not-mail list is account-wide. If a contact unsubscribed from one of your lists, they are added to the do-not-mail list and cannot be re-added to any list through import. This is by design and protects you from re-emailing people who opted out. The import report shows how many addresses were skipped for this reason.

Contact storage pricing

Constant Contact charges based on the number of contacts in your account. Importing a large list increases your contact count and may affect your billing tier. Review your plan limits before importing.

No automatic enrichment

Constant Contact does not automatically look up names, companies or other details for imported email addresses. If you import email addresses only, the contact records will show an email address and no other information until you or a data enrichment process adds it.
