How to Import Extracted Emails into EmailOctopus

Why Import into EmailOctopus?
After extracting email addresses from files using Email Extractor, you may want to bring them into EmailOctopus for email marketing. EmailOctopus is an email marketing platform known for its simplicity and affordability. It offers email campaigns, automations, landing pages, forms and analytics. EmailOctopus provides a generous free tier and lower pricing than many competitors, making it popular with small businesses, startups, bloggers and nonprofits.
Importing an extracted email list into EmailOctopus lets you add contacts to lists, send campaigns and set up automated sequences.
Before You Import
Prepare the file
Email Extractor produces a file with email addresses only. EmailOctopus accepts CSV imports. Email is the only required field.
- Extract email addresses using Email Extractor at bulkemailextractor.com.
- Download the results as CSV.
- The CSV contains one email address per row. This is ready for EmailOctopus import.
If you have names or other data in a separate file, combine the files in a spreadsheet application before importing.
Choose or create a list
EmailOctopus organises contacts into lists. Before importing, choose an existing list or create a new one. Creating a dedicated list (e.g., "Imported Oct 2026") helps you track the origin of imported contacts.
Consider verification
If the extracted emails come from old files or uncertain sources, verify the list before importing. EmailOctopus monitors bounces and may restrict accounts with high bounce rates. See Best email verification services.
How to Import
- Log in to EmailOctopus.
- Go to your list (or create a new one under Lists).
- Click Import contacts (or Add contacts).
- Choose Upload a CSV file and select your file.
- EmailOctopus shows a field mapping screen. Map the email column to the Email address field.
- Optionally add a tag to the imported contacts.
- Choose the subscription status for imported contacts.
- Review the import preview.
- Start the import.
- EmailOctopus processes the file and shows a summary of contacts added, updated and skipped.
After Import
Review the import summary
EmailOctopus reports how many contacts were created, how many already existed and how many were skipped or bounced. Review these numbers.
Send a test campaign
Before sending a full campaign to imported contacts, consider a small test. Monitor open rate, bounce rate and unsubscribes.
Set up segments
EmailOctopus supports tags and segments to organise contacts. Use tags applied during import to create segments for targeted campaigns.
Check automations
If your list has active automations (welcome emails, drip sequences), imported contacts may trigger them. Review automation settings before importing.
Things to Know
Contact-centric within lists
Each email address exists once per list. Importing an email address that already exists on the list updates that contact (adds any new tags or data) rather than creating a duplicate.
Unsubscribes
If a contact previously unsubscribed from your EmailOctopus list, importing their email address again does not re-subscribe them. EmailOctopus respects previous consent decisions.
Pricing
EmailOctopus offers a free plan for up to 2,500 subscribers (as of the time of writing). Paid plans scale based on subscriber count. Importing contacts increases your subscriber count and may change your plan tier.
No enrichment
EmailOctopus does not automatically look up names, companies or other information for imported email addresses. Imported contacts contain only the data you provide.
Simple interface
EmailOctopus is designed for simplicity. It has fewer features than platforms like ActiveCampaign or Klaviyo but is easier to learn and more affordable. The import process is straightforward.
Amazon SES option
EmailOctopus historically offered a plan that sends through your own Amazon SES account (EmailOctopus Connect). This reduces sending costs for high-volume senders. The import process is the same regardless of which sending option you use.
Landing pages and forms
EmailOctopus includes landing page and form builders for collecting subscribers. These are separate from the CSV import but add contacts to the same lists.
Bounce handling
EmailOctopus automatically handles bounces. Hard-bounced addresses are marked and excluded from future sends. If your imported list contains addresses that bounce, EmailOctopus manages this automatically.
