How to Extract Emails from Mailchimp Audience Segments

On this page

Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.

Why Extract Segments from Mailchimp?

Mailchimp is one of the most widely used email marketing platforms. Its audience management includes segments: dynamic or saved groups of contacts filtered by criteria like purchase history, engagement level, location, tag, signup source and more.

Extracting email addresses from specific segments is useful for importing targeted lists into a CRM, sharing segment data with teams, running campaigns through a different platform, cross-referencing with other data sources or creating a backup.

While the general Mailchimp export is covered in Extract Emails from Mailchimp Export, this article focuses on exporting and extracting from specific audience segments.

Working with the Results

Import into a CRM

Import segmented contact emails into HubSpot, Salesforce or another CRM for targeted sales and support activities.

Cross-platform campaigns

Run campaigns through a different email marketing platform using a specific Mailchimp segment. Extract and import the list into the target platform.

Compare segments

Export multiple segments and upload together. Deduplication creates a combined list of unique email addresses. Download CSV with sources and compare the source names to find addresses shared by the exports. Use the original records for person matching or status checks; the comparison only establishes that the same email string appears in multiple sources.

Re-engagement

Extract inactive subscribers (low engagement rating) for a re-engagement campaign or list cleanup.

Verify addresses

Contacts in older or less engaged segments may have outdated addresses. See Best email verification services.

Things to Know

Contact data is not preserved

Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. Names, tags, engagement ratings, locations, groups and other Mailchimp fields are not carried over.

Dynamic vs. saved segments

Dynamic segments update automatically as contacts match or stop matching the criteria. Saved segments are snapshots. The export captures contacts at the time of export regardless of type.

Audience vs. segment export

Exporting the full audience gives all contacts. Exporting a segment gives a filtered subset. Make sure you export the right one.
