How to Extract Emails from a Kit (ConvertKit) Export

On this page

Export and import options vary by plan, permissions and product version. Check the platform’s current help documentation if a menu or format differs. Use only contact data you are authorized to process; an extracted address is not proof of marketing consent.

Why Extract from Kit?

Kit (formerly ConvertKit) is an email marketing platform designed for creators: bloggers, podcasters, YouTubers, musicians, course creators and authors. It stores subscriber records that include email addresses, first names, tags, custom fields, sign-up sources, engagement data and product purchase history. Subscribers are typically collected through landing pages, sign-up forms, integrations with creator platforms (Teachable, Gumroad, Patreon) and manual imports.

Extracting email addresses from Kit data is useful in several scenarios.

Migrating to another platform. When switching from Kit to a different email marketing service, a clean email list provides a starting point for the new platform or serves as a verification reference after migration.

Consolidating subscribers. If you use Kit alongside other tools (a membership platform, a course platform, a podcast host, a CRM), extracting from each and deduplicating produces one complete subscriber list.

Auditing your list. Kit charges based on subscriber count. Exporting and extracting gives you an independent count of unique email addresses, which you can compare against Kit's reported total (especially if you have cold subscribers you may want to remove).

Backing up. Before making major changes to your Kit account (merging accounts, changing plans, transferring ownership), extracting all email addresses ensures you have an independent copy.

How to Export from Kit

Kit uses a subscriber-centric model where each subscriber exists once in your account and can have multiple tags, sequences and form associations.

Exporting all subscribers

  1. Log in to Kit at kit.com (or app.convertkit.com if you are still on the legacy domain).
  2. Go to Subscribers (or Grow and then Subscribers, depending on the interface version).
  3. Click Export (or find the export option in the subscriber list view).
  4. Kit generates a CSV file containing all subscribers. For large lists, you may receive an email notification when the export is ready.
  5. Download the file.

Exporting by tag, segment or form

If you want a subset of subscribers:

  1. Go to Subscribers and filter by a specific tag, form, sequence or segment.
  2. Export the filtered view.

This produces a CSV containing only the subscribers matching your filter criteria.

Export fields

Kit subscriber exports typically include: email address, first name, subscriber status (active, cancelled, bounced, complained), created date (when they subscribed), tags and custom fields. The specific columns depend on your account's custom fields and how the export is configured.

How to Extract the Email Addresses

  1. Go to bulkemailextractor.com.
  2. Select "Text and files."
  3. Upload the CSV file (or files, if you made separate exports by tag or form). Up to 25 MB per file, 100 MB per batch.
  4. Click "Extract emails."
  5. Review the results. Duplicates are removed automatically.
  6. Download as TXT for a plain list, CSV for a single-column spreadsheet, or CSV with sources to see which export file each address came from.

Working with the Results

Track sign-up sources

If you export subscribers by form or tag and upload all files in one extraction, downloading as CSV with sources shows which form or tag each address came from. This helps you understand which lead magnets or content pieces generated the most subscribers.

Combine with course or membership platforms

Upload your Kit export alongside an export from Teachable, Thinkific, Podia, Gumroad, or your membership platform. Deduplication creates a combined list of unique email addresses. Download CSV with sources and compare the source names to find addresses shared by the exports. Confirm subscription or membership status in the original records; matching addresses alone do not establish a current active membership.

Find cold subscribers

Kit's subscriber list may include people who have not opened or clicked an email in months. After extraction, compare the list against your engagement data (from the original CSV's engagement fields) to identify cold subscribers. This is useful for planning a re-engagement campaign or a list cleanup.

Verify before importing elsewhere

Creator email lists can accumulate inactive addresses over time, especially if subscribers signed up for a freebie and never engaged again. Running the extracted list through a verification service before importing into a new platform helps maintain deliverability. See Best email verification services.

Things to Know

Column headers are not extracted

CSV column headers from Kit are text, not email addresses, so they do not appear in the extracted results.

Subscriber data is not preserved

Email Extractor outputs email addresses only. First names, tags, custom fields, sign-up dates, purchase history and engagement data from the Kit export are not carried over. If you need those fields in your new platform, import the original CSV directly.

Cancelled and bounced subscribers

Kit tracks subscriber status: active, cancelled (unsubscribed), bounced and complained. Depending on your export settings, non-active subscribers may be included. These addresses will appear in the extracted results. Do not re-subscribe cancelled or complained subscribers on another platform. Check the status column in the original export.

Kit's subscriber-centric model

Unlike some email platforms that count a subscriber once per list, Kit counts each subscriber once regardless of how many tags or forms they are associated with. This means your Kit subscriber count is already a unique count. Extraction still helps when you need to combine Kit data with other platforms or produce a standalone file.

ConvertKit to Kit rebrand

Kit was previously called ConvertKit. The product is the same; only the name changed. Older exports may say "ConvertKit" in the file name or column headers. The CSV format is identical.

Paid newsletter and commerce subscribers

If you use Kit's paid newsletter or commerce features, subscribers who have purchased products or paid for a newsletter subscription are stored in the same subscriber list. Their purchase status is tracked through tags or custom fields but is not preserved in the extracted output.
